What 'protection' do you suggest I carry? Is there a 105 calibre or do you suggest the next level in some areas?

I suggest latex - you may want ribbed for additional traction action. As for calibre, that's a personal parameter.
Actually the sealed roads over here aren't too bad, except for being bloody short, and an exceptionally high chance of getting creamed coming around Post Office corner.
A few weeks ago the town's only fire engine lost it through the chicane and killed fifteen people in the process. I see it's back in action now, but there seem to be a reduced bevvy of firefighters onboard.
There is / was one unicycle in town, spotted one night when I was out consuming de-stressing ales. His tyre was down to the canvas, and I was gonna bring him in a replacement, but I've never seen him since, and that was about 8 months ago. Post Office corner may have got him - It's kind of tricky...

Here's a couple of photo's from the proposed innaugural TAAN route. Watch out for those random-reversing taxi's down near Post Office corner...

Right, it's set then. The 1st TAAN ride will set off from Ngoue Bridge, pass through the swamp at Mbidibidi Bario, do a loop at Post Office corner, and back to Nkosu for ginger beer and scones with lashings of cream. Oh, I say...
