Now that I'm out of the "big guy shoe" category, I'd like to
try some of the lighter weight shoes made for faster
workouts or an ocassional race. I am currently rotating 3
stability shoes: NewBalance 765, Brooks Adrenaline GTS4, and
Asics Gel 1090. Can someone recommend a lighter weight shoe
that still has the support and stablility of the shoes I've
been wearing? Thanks.

Phil, what's your weight at now? Is it still going to
decline, or do you intend to stabilize it where you're at?

It may increase. Again.

Hope is one thing, expectation another, but REAL LIFE,
that's the thing!

I'd try the New Balance 900, Mizuno Mustang, and Nike
Zoom Elite.

Mizunos leak, Nikes upset Wobbot, and New Balance are for
tubby old men in lycra (which, of course, you may be).

Make a selection from the Pearl Izumi range. You'll *look*
good and, as any decent runner will tell you, that's all
that matters.

None will have *the same* support and stability (flexibility
is part of what makes a performance shoe). There is a
lightweight stability category of shoes though. Since I
don't wear them, I can't recommend any, but here are a
number of models from that group:

Asics DS Trainer New Balance 900 Mizuno Wave Maverick Nike
Zoom Elite

The DS Trainer hasn't enjoyed very good reviews, a lot of
people don't like it. Global (who often wearts light
stability shoes) wore the Maverick and liked it, but it wore
out quickly. Then again, he is hard on shoes, and was using
it for general purpose training. At least one of the posters
(amh) here has tried the Zoom Elite.

Is the Mustang a lightweight trainer ? I have the rider
which I thought was slightly lighter, and even that is sort
of borderline.

That's one of the most persuasive arguments for Nike I've
ever heard (-;

What do you mean about Mizunos leaking ? I have a pair of
Wave Riders and I'm quite happy with them. I think the
Mustang is a bit heavy to go into the performance category.

BTW, didn't you wear NB 83x at one stage ? As I recall,
the only thing you didn't like about them was that they
didn't last.

The rider has the advantage of a wide toe box, too.
I'm appreciating my second pair more and more.

Currently I'm at 168. Stabilizing at around 165.

Y'think? I actually feel young Wobbot is correct in his
assumptions regarding Nikes.

My pair of Wave-something-or-others draw in water THROUGH
THE SOLE. I've never experienced this before in any make of
shoe. Having said that, they're lasting well (I only use
them in the dry. I live in Scotland. Go figure.)

Well, that, and the fact that the midsole was *very* tender,
the carbon rubber on the outsole was missing *just* where my
shoes wear, and the laces constantly untied themselves
despite being double-knotted. However, the first 80 miles
were super.

Thanks for the info. I've been reading the "DS-Trainer"
thread. It makes me wonder if this shoe is so bad, maybe
I should look into the closeout areas to find the DS
Trianer 6 or 7.

The New Balance 900 has pretty good reviews. So maybe I'll
give that one a try.

BTW, what's the deal with several of the lightweight styles
being yellow? I don't think that I've ever had a pair of
yellow shoes.

FWIW, I don't wear Nikes either. I simply don't trust them,
at least not when it comes to making trainers. That and I'm
already pretty happy with Saucony, Asics and Mizuno
(especially Asics).

I suppose this has something to do with the way they're
ventilated (they're very breathable by design -- which
probably isn't so good when it's wet) I noticed I was
getting awfully wet when I wore them on a wet track once. I
still like mine though.

Do you remember which model you have ? Just curious.

Let's rephrase this to remove redundancies.

Phil, what's your weight now? Is it still going to decline,
or do you intend to stabilise it?

See how much less typing this involves?

I dislike them because of the medial post, but NB330's are
considered by many to be a good lightweight shoe for those
than need stabiliy features. Maybe give them a shot.

They make them that way to match my team uniform (-;

Through the sole? How did you conclude that?

The breathability of shoe is a two edged sword - it allows
air AND moisture through the wider pores. Under high
humidity wet days they will behave like a sponge. When the
day is dry they will wick nicely. Since I end up going
through ankle deep streams, to not have a breathable shoe is
tantamount to a very squishy ride with potential blisters
and overall uncomfortable foot fall.

In the winter I have to be careful to wear warmer socks.

I've been wearing the Zoom Elite and like them. My 2nd pair
are Saucony 3d Grid which I tend to wear for longer runs. If
believe if I had stuck with Nike for racing shoes, last
summer's foot injury may have been avoided.

I've been wearing wool socks, especially in wet weather, and
they work very well (even when I'm wearing Mizuno shoes ;-).
