12-year-old girl runs 16:43 5K
View Full Version : 12-year-old girl runs 16:43 5K
At the National Scholastic Indoor Championships on Friday,
7th grader Briana Jackucewicz of New Jersey broke the HIGH
SCHOOL 5K record held by Cathy Schiro, now known as Cathy
O'Brien. So a girl 2 years too young to compete in a high
school meet now officially holds the US High School record.
This is also a WORLD RECORD for 13-year-olds.

The next Mary Decker?
If she survives her training. This is a 12-year-old girl
weighing in at a whopping 60-some pounds. But according to
press accounts (she was mentioned in a NY Times piece by
Marc Bloom a while back) she is putting in 50 mile weeks,
including a weekly long run a bit over 10 miles.
Comments anyone?

There's a girl a year older from my area named Stephanie
Smith who runs mid 17's for 5k when in shape. I know
that's not quite
16:43 (boy, do I ever know... lol). Still, both times are
very impressive. She's often the subject of
conversation... how much of the drive/training/etc is
from her and how much is from her parents pushing her.
cheers,

I suggest Kaopectate, it'll help her runs. Anyways this is
BS, you hear about these 'child wonders' every few years,
yet not one has ever lived up to their expectations.

At the risk of being repetitive - jabberwocky!

What a shame to see young life being wasted.

And I thought I've seen fast 12 year olds.
Today, there was a St Patties day 5k race and a particular
12 year old girl was one of the first females to finish. To
my surprise, she was beat out by another 12 year old female
that run sub 20 minutes.
I don't know when of if I'll ever see that. I haven't even
broken a 6 minute mile yet.

Whatever happened to Cathy Schiro O'Brien. I remember her in
the '88 marathon trials, that's the last I've heard of her.

She was mentioned (with photo) in New England Runner last
Fall (don't remember the exact issue) in connection with
results from a local 5k race. Her reported time was 19 and
change, and she appeared to be a few pounds over fighting
weight. It looks as if she has acquired a life outside
competitive running.
Not that there's anything wrong with that!
Actually, it's good to see a former elite runner able to
swallow their pride and continue recreational running after
having returned to the ranks of the mere mortals.

She must have gone thro' 3000 metres , sub 10 mins...that's pretty good. I
won the u13 boys county champs at 3000 with 10.04 way back in th 80's
Hope she keeps it 'fun' at that age, as I burnt myself out through doing too
much, and regarding training as..'aaaggghhh' my bro was 10 and could do 3000
in 10.22, and he also gave it up 3 years later
All the best.ENGLISH FRED C

I believe that she ran in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic
Marathons and retired from elite running a while afterwards.
I don't think she competed in the 1996 trials.
