I stopped reading it a long, long time ago. They appear to
be happy going for the demographic that can be described
as either just learning to run, running for weight loss
(not competition) as the main goal... that sort of thing
(and that's fine). It's just not really suited for
competitive runners, which are a much smaller percentage
of pontential buyers.

I originally subscribed primarily for the calendar
which now seems to be pretty much gone. I may let my
subscription lapse but it won't do so until sometime
next year by which time I suppose I might have
changed my mind.

I just received mine today. At first glance, it looks like
Cosmopolitan magazine. It looks good to me. The content
seems to be the same fun-runner type fluff. Not a whole lot
about competitive running. That's fine with me. I can get
that sort of information elsewhere. They seem to be focusing
on making a profit. I can't fault them for that.

So what issues do you have with it?

It's a magazine full of joggers, and jogger related
articles. You didn't really think it could be good, did you?
Line the canary's cage with it. It's still great for that.

the calendar is on their website and for me anyway actually
works better as it has links to the race websites.

true, true. i bought the mag a lot when i started out
running. i got tips and motivational info from it. and some
articles are entertaining and informative. but it's light
stuff, and whatever useful info IS there is repeated ad
nauseum in issue after issue.

i still pick it up occasionally if i see that there's an
article i want to have, or if i just need a little
something to inspire me or kick me in the pants to get back
out on the roads.

Sometimes back I sensed an inverse relationship to
subscribing to Runner's World and my running, whenever I had
a subscription I ran worse. Never figured it out, but now I
just grab one at the newstand if something interests me.

Another good site is:

http://www.runningintheusa.com/

you can click on a map of a state and it gives you a
listing of races.

Actually sometimes Google finds stuff no one else has
listed.

For those of you Boston bound especially the first time, I
would strongly suggest you read Amby Burfoot's "Why is
downhill running so difficult." The article is applicable to
any endurance race with significant downhill but he uses
Boston as an example to drive home the point.
