Runners and Sleep
View Full Version : Runners and Sleep
I've heard that many runners who run more than 10 miles a
day daily need like 12 hours of sleep daily to recover. Is
this true?

Myths like this fall into the same category as "a girls
ovaries will fall out" if they run. Running may make you
sleep a little more when you first start running but not 12
hours. After some experience I'd say we sleep deeper/better
but not more. In effect there is no proportion of running
miles to hours of sleep. If I ran 20 would I need 24 hours
or 6 hours for 5 miles? :)
I average about 6 hours a night regardless of how far I run.

The only people who could possibly get that much sleep must
be either single or in jail.

When El Guerrouj's coach (Kada) spoke in the UK a few years
ago, he said that El Guerrouj sleeps 11 hours a day--8 hours
at night and another forced 3 hours in the afternoon.
It depends on how hard you're training--and training load is
more than just how many miles you're running. During the
offseason or when I'm just doing sprint training (like now),
I can get by on 7 hours per night. But when I'm doing hard
stuff like 400's with 60 second rest and vVO2 max sessions,
I need more like 9 hours. We had a discussion about this a
year or two ago, and as I recall, Troy had roughly the same
experience as me.

Try it yourself.
Running cut my need for sleep by 1-2 hours. So it "pays"
for itself.
One way I know its time to take a rest day is that I feel
like sleeping in.
It must be true. Most of their posts seem to be typed
while sleeping.

Small thoughts. Consider the independently wealthy and
the retired.
