Wasn't it fun reading these articles? The great and the wise
of the coaching community offering what was often completely
contradictory training advice. Strange, really, especially
when you consider that the basic biomechanical systems of
the human body are reasonably well-documented and
understood.
I guess the old adage "all training works" is true. I'll go
further. I'll suggest that the *real* differences between
runners exists in their heads, i.e. they're psychological.
This singular reality pisses off all manner of people,
especially the Sam's, Lyndon's and Donny's of this world,
who love to quantify, analyse and tabulate their training
programmes - as if any of it really mattered.
But what if 'running success' was related more to motivation
than genes? What if our ultimate speed over 5k was related
to our ability to compartmentalise pain? What if ultras were
won by the strongest personality, not by the guy with the
greatest number of speedy training miles in his legs? Turn
the whole world topsy-turvey, wouldn't it?
We couldn't blame our lack of training time, our poor
speedwork schedules, our coaches, our diet (DAMN, there go
some lengthy threads...), our genes. It would be all down to
'us', to our own ability to motivate our training, our
preparation, and our race.
Hell, that's too much responsibility. 'Twould take all the
fun out of running. Don't know about you, but the only
reason I run is so I can ***** and whine about the rest of
the world stopping me becoming what I *know* I am - the
fastest 50 y-old on the planet.
