First real blast.
View Full Version : First real blast.
Nice spring evening yesterday, so tried a 30 mile ride on
the new road bike. Got togged up in shorts and new yellow
Gore jacket (still a bit chilly E wind), so could I pass for
a proper roadie (oh no- I've become what I said I never
would!) . One thing I noticed was the reaction I got from
drivers of very expensive cars who looked on enviously as
they passed in their tin box on such a day.
Previous problem with pressure on the hands had all but
gone and had now transferred itself to my bum, well I
suppose it had to go somewhere. Got more and more confident
with the handling that by the end it was great fun to
actually power into a bend and up a hill (or what passes
for one round here). Found this even more enjoyable than in
in a sports car.
Polished off the 30 miles in no time at all and only really
had to head for home as I was 15 miles out and getting
hungry. Nice backwind on the way home meant I could hold 22
-25 mph just breathing through the nose. Gearing meant top
speed is around 28 mph unless I spin furiously.
What I need to do now is head west for some proper hills and
see if the twin chainrings give a low enough bottom gear to
climb - if not I'll have to fit a triple I reckon. Rain
expected tomorrow, so might try a half century today
:-)

Simon is now a roadie. Time to shave the legs. :-)

How monstrous are those hills? I doubt you'll feel the need
for a triple. Besides, it would ruin the new macho image.

In t'old days you were considered a wuss if you had a
sprocket bigger than 21T. No-one would have dared turn up
with a triple chainset unless it was a touring bike or MTB.
I don't know what the world's coming to, I really don't ;-)

I can find you monstrous hills in West Yorkshire. I used to
grunt round my Bronte Circuit on a 39x24 but it is much
easier and therefore I can go further with a triple (30x24).

Have to agree with you there - some killers! rather use the
triple than have to get off and walk up - now that really
isn't macho.

The best way to climb hills is to have only one gear, and
shoes that offer no traction on tarmac. That way you have no
choice but to make it to the top... by hook or crook!

Hmm, don't forget I play 5 a side as well - I might be at a

It's 60 miles to Leeds - I meant west of Hull, i.e.
Yorkshire Wolds!

Then you should be nicely warmed up when you get there!

I thought you meant PROPER HILLS :-), if you feel like an
excursion into the Pennines I'd be happy to tell you about
my favourite hilly routes.

When I used to play 5-a-side no one commented on my smooth
legs - much to my surprise.

Shudder! Thanks for the offer, but I'd better see if I can
handle the Wolds first with a double chainring. Simon M.

I don't think I have spent much time in that part of East
Yorkshire, maybe this year I may ride to Hull and back
(typed that very carefully)
I would be grateful for any reccomendations for Leeds centric road routes.
30-40 miles would be ideal :)
Routes East of Hull are best avoided in my opinion by
the way ;-)

Leeds -A58 to Collingham, back road to Harewood then
Arthington, Pool; Otley; Bramhope and back to Leeds is
around 33 miles starting in Meanwood.
A 25 mile loop uses the A61 to Harewood then to
Arthington etc.
Try it, you'll like it.

Which side of Leeds are you ? I am in Morley and have lots
of routes around here of varying length and hillyness.
A fairly easy 40 miler takes me from Morley through
Rothwell, Oulton, Woodlesford, Swillington, Garforth, Barwick-in-Elmet-
Scholes, Thorner, East Rigton, East Keswick, Harewood and
back to Leeds on the A61.
Instead of coming home from Harewood I often go down
Harewood bank and on the A659 to Otley then back on the
A660, this makes it about 50 miles for
me.
A much more hilly ride, one 'hill' is a long drag of 8 miles
and passes over that high bridge spanning the M62 at
Scammonden Resevoir takes me from Morley on the A650 then
A58 through Cleckheaton onto Brighouse. A643 to Elland then
the B6114 onto the moor, (my map says the altitude is 453m
by the way, this is the 8 mile drag, a killer with a head
wind) At the junction turn left onto the A640 all the way
back , pass under the M62, take the first right back under
the motorway again and around the northern side of
Huddersfield to the junction with the A644 (Cooper Bridge).
Then home on the A62 with left at 5 lanes cross onto the
A651 then after passing through Gomersal, turn right back on
the A58 and onthe A650.(This dogleg makes for one long hill
instead of two or three shorter but steeper ones)This ride
is 42 miles for me with some super views and testing hills.
Mail me if you want more accurate details or want anymore
routes, I generally do rides of at least 40 miles,
usually 60+
Cheers Vernon and MSeries
I will give your suggestions a try out soon as I am keen
to make better use of the improving weather and to
extend my range.
I also live in sunny Morley and despite our illustrious
cycling history rarely see other road cyclists.
Thanks again
Paul

I used to live in Burley-in-Wharfedale and I worked first in
Bradfor then Leeds. Cycling to work was uphill for 6 miles,
down hill for ttwp or three then flat the rest of the way. A
nice rout would be out through bramhope down through otley
then on to burley, then up towards guisley on through rawdon
and along back into leeds. 25miles? extend it by droping
down int pool and along into otley and burley up to guisley
and the same as before. Or for a bit of a challenge out to
lawnswood, on up to tinshill back roads behind the airport
along past the airpot into yeadon, drop down into guisely,
down towards burley, along by the river through otley,
ontowards pool, up pool bank straight past the airport down
int rawdon and back into leeds. Not sure of the distance,
but the hight should help you sleep at night:)
I feel quite home sick now, after typing all that. Ah
well...
