View Full Version : cycling near Lille, France?
Someone suggested that I post in this newsgroup. Sorry if
its not the right place.
Has anyone cycled in the area of Lille, France and its
surroundings? I have heard that it might be industrial. I
would really like to know if there are bike paths or
anything like that. thanks, David

This month's Cycling Plus has a good article on spectating
on the Paris-Roubaix.
Bit of a pity that the Eurostar doesn't allow bikes(*), or
it would be a really accessible area for people in the
SouthEast anyway.
(*) I know... get a Brompton. Get a bike bag.
(**) At the risk of starting another lengthy train thread,
do the GNER White Rose trains allow bikes? And if so, as
these are Eurostar rolling stock, why doesn't Eurostar?

Eurostar does allow bikes, quote: 'How can I take my
bike/trunk/other large or heavy objects/more than my =
baggage allowance on Eurostar?=20 The luggage allowance on
Eurostar is two cases or bags and one item of = hand
luggage.=20
For any of the above requests*, please contact Esprit
Europe on +44 = ()870 5 850 850 who will arrange for your
baggage to be transported = separately for a small cost.
Please note that baggage needs to be taken = to Esprit
Europe to be registered at least 24 hours prior to your =
Eurostar departure. This will enable you to reclaim it on
your arrival.
*The only exceptions are bicycles which can be folded and
carried = on-board in a bicycle bag, counting as one item of
your baggage = allowance. These are carried subject to
dimensions and capacity = constraints. '
What C+ didn't mention in the article was that for the foot
based = traveller you can get to Roubaix on the tram. It's a
20 minute journey = from Lille to Euroteleport and I think
it costs about =A31 for a single.
What the article also failed to mention was that there are
two factory = type outlets where you can pick up some decent
bargains. Last year I got = a pair of M Frames for =A365 in
the Oakley shop (a pair of A Wires the = year before for
=A345). There are also shops for Lafuma (8 panel shorts, =
gore tex coats, windstopper fleeces), Nike (Jackets, socks,
short sleeve = tops) and Adidas (bib tights/shorts).
If you're looking for basic gear then Go Sport in Euralille
shopping = centre also do some good own brand bike clothing
as well as Gore and a = few French brands.
If you travel onto Brussels there's also a much smaller Go
Sport there = and a Lillywhites which carries a good
selection.
