Tableland Tour - Cairns
Hi,

Has anyone done to Cairns May Tour before. This year it is on May 1-3 , 2004 around the Atherton Tablelands, Karumbara or someplace like that. Just wondering how hard the event is (how tough the hills are?)

Hey there.

I havent raced the Cairns May Tour but have done quite a bit of riding in the area. To be honest I havent heard of the May Tour but I never paid any attention to non-mtb events when I lived up there.

Many years ago I did the Cairns to Karumba tour (about 700km from memory which was a great experience. I took it as a tour (it was a charity event after all) and rode my hardtail mtb - wouldn't want to be riding a stiff road bike on many of the roads out west, believe you me!

The RRR up there in october(?) is one of the best mtb races... certainly the best I have been involved in.

Starts in a sleepy country town on the tablelands and follows some rolling hills (graded dirt road) then a bit of a climb then single-track thru an absolutely stunning bit of rainforest.

Next comes the descent down a nice & rocky dh section, then a ride along some nice country roads to the township of port douglas. The race then weaves through the town and finishes with a stretch riding along the beach.

If you are into mtbing it is certainly a race worth travelling for.
