Do you think Kastor will be running the marathon in Athens?

Did she get injured or something? Why would she run the
Olympic trials, qualify, and not go to Athens?

I did a little reading and it sounds like she is planning
for the 'thon. For some reason I thought she would be
competing in the 5000m or the 10000m.

That's better. You had me worried for a bit there. According
to an article in Runner's World, she was the favorite going
into the U.S. trials, so it would be a major bummer if she
couldn't make the Olympics. De Reuck's win is actually an
upset. Maybe Kastor just went out to qualify and not leave
too much on the trial course.

This story on the Runner's World site reported she had a
problem with glycogen depletion around mile 22. Should be
easy enough to work out.
But then the New York Marathon site
http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/news/deena.html reports she is
taking only a one week recovery, so maybe your right.
Just hoping network TV coverage of the Olympics is a little
better this year than the Sydney games.

Thanks for the link. This quote from the first article
implies she's considering competing in the 5 and 10K in
Athens, with the marathon as a priority:
"Her competition plans include the track and field Trials
in Sacramento, where, if her marathon preparation allows,
she will contest the 5000m and 10,000m. If she places in
the top three, however, 'I'm definitely running the
marathon in Athens.'"
Has anyone, male or female, competed in the 5K, 10K and 42K
events in the same Olympic games? With all of the pre-
qualifying runs during the games for the 5K and 10K events,
this seems like an awful lot of full-throttle running for
someone who hopes to medal in the marathon.

Doubling in the 5k and 10k would be impressive enough. My
take is that she is running the trials as training races and
does not intend to compete the 5k or 10k in Athens even if
she qualifies. I think racing in the trials is good for the
best track fans in America and I'm sure they will be
appreciative.
I'm not real confident in the Athens Olympic website, but
they show qualifying for the 5000 on the 20th, the 'thon on
the 22nd, and finals for the 5000 on the 23rd. The 10000
isn't listed as near as I can tell. But even with just
those two, I don't think even Macelroy could handle that
intense a schedule.
Perhaps it is a back up plan if she is doesn't stay healthy
enough for the 'thon.

Not only did Emil Zatopek compete in all three events in the
1952 games in Helsinki, but he won the gold in each.

Communications from USATF has it that Kastor has also signed
up to be running the New York Marathon. So as you might
imagine, all sorts of second guessing has been going on
about what she's up to (could be everything).

BTW, did anyone else catch (from one of the articles
referenced elsewhere in this thread), how Kastor takes a
week completely off running after a marathon. This, of
course, along with ice baths and lost of massaging. Looks
like she's not too concerned with losing fitness level under
total rest conditions.

But the NY 'thon takes place in the fall, 2-3 months after
the Olympics, so it shouldn't affect her Olympic effort, and
hopefully shouldn't be significantly affected by her Olympic
effort either. Hopefully.

My guess is that she is looking at a potential big payday. I
think NYCM is about 80 days post-Athens. If others do not
show, even with a less than great performance, she could
bring home some serious money. Remember she is a
PROFESSIONAL runner--that is how she makes her living.
Appearance money (I bet there is a bonus if she has an
Olympic medal), prize money (with the American bonus
potential that is in the prize structure), media (so her
sponsors might add some $$$) and it makes sense.
She does not have a history of injury so she seems to be
able to withstand the mileage.
I doubt that she will not give it her all in Athens. Now, if
she is running 20th, she might not make a move to get to
15th and "save" herself to some extent, but I see little
difference in coming in 15th and 20th in the Olympic
marathon (there is no prize money and USATF/USOC offer no
money for finishing out of the medals).
