Tips on using sunscreen?
View Full Version : Tips on using sunscreen?
I'll be running a marathon next month and will likely need
to use sunscreen during the later half of the race from
about 10:30 AM to 1PM. I usually run in the early morning or
late afternoon so I don't need to use sunscreen. I have used
it occasionally and always kind of felt uncomfortable and
thought it kept from sweating. I was wondering what how
folks who regularly use sunscreen feel about it and what
kind of tips you may have to offer. Thanks.

I don't have any particular recommendation for sunscreen,
but I do recommend doing a few of your long runs during the
time of day that you'll be running the marathon. During
that time you can experiment with sunscreens and whatever
else may be an issue. You don't want any surprises come
marathon day.

I am a new runner but frequent outdoor exerciser. Being fair-
skinned and living in the high desert I use sunscreen every
day and have never had the trouble you have experienced. You
may try a different brand, especially one designed for
"sport" use or one labeled noncomedogenic (doesn't clog
pores). Another option is to wear a wide-brimmed hat.
Best of luck, Matthew

I found a really good sunscreen at REI. It is their product.
It comes in SPF 30 and SPF 45. It is the best that I have
used. Really!!

The new Gel sunscreens are are a big improvement. Eye
stinging is minimized and they don't feel greasy. I use
Bullfrog Gel and also used a different brand that I can
remember, both worked well. A hat is a good idea as you
won't need to put any on your forehead and any eye stinging
would be eliminated.

I have been using Coppertone Sport SPF 30 sunscreen. I have
been using it for two years now and have not had any
problems at all. It does not sting the skin or my eyes. I
put a ton on my face with no problems. You should try what
ever brand before the marathon to see how you react to
it.I would put it on before I start the race......

Jim I like Bullfrog Quick Gel - it seems to stay on all day
and doesn't rub or or run into the eyes. It's about spf 35
I think. Have literally run all way with it and not gotten
sun burned.
Good Luck!

PRESIDENT: The terrorists and Baathist holdouts know that a
free and stable Iraq will be a major defeat to the cause of
hatred and terror. They can't stand the thought of a free
society. They know that the rise of democracy and hope in
the Middle East will mean the decline of their appeal and
influence. So the terrorists understand that Iraq is the
central front in the war on terror. They're testing our
will. And, day by day, they are learning, our will is firm,
their cause will fail. We will stay on the offensive.
Whatever it takes, we will seek and find and destroy the
terrorists, so that we do not have to face them in our own
country. "

I don't know but I had exactly the opposite experience with
Bullfrog Gel - I got sunburnt after like 2 hours.

Drink 4 or 5 ounces of SPF-30 right before the gun goes off.
You'll be protected all day long.
Tip #1: No sunscreen on forehead! Wear a cap. If you wear a
headband or visor, put sunscreen on scalp.
