View Full Version : Arch pain after a switch in running shoes--too much support?

I recently purchased a pair of Asics Gel Foundation Motion
Control shoes after modest, cross-train running (50-100
miles per year) the past several years in a pair of Asics
125 Motion Control shoes.

My old Asics had a nearly perfect wear pattern and never
gave me any trouble so I *assumed* that I couldn't go wrong
with another pair of Asics Motion Control shoes. I purchased
Asics Gel Foundation shoes which feel decent when I go on a
typical 3-4 mile run. However, near the end and after my
arches (middle and front, not the heel) really ache and I
just can't wait to get the shoes off. I've only been out in
these 1/2 dozen times and I keep hoping for a break-in but
people tell me this shouldn't be necessary. My arches are
still bothering me after my last run which was 3 days ago.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I welcome
suggestions for another (Asics) shoe that would more closely
fit the design of my old shoes. I'm certain that running
doesn't need to be painful in a new pair of shoes.

Thanks for any and all advice,

Joe

I had a very similar experience. After starting with the
ASICS MC Plus and losing some weight, I thought I could go
down to the ASICS Foundation. Much to my chagrin, though the
shoe felt great, after 2-3 miles of running, my left arch
would start to hurt. I've tried other motion control shoes,
including the Brooks Beast and Addiction, and the
NB 1120 (I think that's the right model, but I may be off),
with similar results. I ended up using the ASICS Gel Koji
now for 1 1/2 years without any arch pain, though after
about 9 months in them, I started having chronic calf
issues. I solved that with an SOF Sole hard motion
control insert, and have been very happy for some time,
so I'm sticking with this combo until the shoe company
executives decide to make the Koji's obsolete :(.
