race coming up and i have a cold
View Full Version : race coming up and i have a cold
Any advice on training and running a race when
catching a cold?
for 3 months now, i've been training hard for the brooklyn
1/2 marathon coming up april 24th. unfortunately i've come
down with a cold this past week (sinus congestion, runny
nose/eyes, and cough) but no fever. i have given my body a
rest for a couple days hoping to get better. yesterday, i
took the first run in 2 days and it felt like a struggle
just doing 6 miles. i still feel run down and congested.
tomorrow is my long training run day where i was planning to
run about 10 miles (i'm at the point of starting to taper).
i'm wondering if i should even attempt it. with the race
coming up in 2 weeks, i feel i can't afford to lose training
days, but then again i don't want this cold to get worse and
end up having to forfeit the race (which would totally suck
after all this hard work and training). so i feel stuck. any
advice would be appreciated. thanks.
I've read that doing nothing for 5 days causes you to lose
only 1% of your conditioning.
I also rember Lance Armstrong's coach saying something
similar about a setback Lance had in training.
Just take 4-5 days off, or jog slow and short every other
day, and ramp up again. You'll be fine. you'll still get a
week of training in before your taper.
I know how hard it is to stop training hard, but you really
don't lose much from a few days off.
I once had a hip injury and didn't run a step for 6 days. My
first run after the layoff was a 10k, and I got a PR.

Yes, even though it's a little late in the game... Zinc
losenges. I swear by these puppies, especially for the
type of run-down colds we runners tend to get when we
get a little too close to the over-training/under-
resting edge. Last three colds have come and gone in 2
days; take 4 losenges, preferrably with food, per day,
and presto, Cold be gone. It's best to use these at the
first sign of symptoms.

Ride my monster all night, in the morning we'll feel better
(well I will anyways...)
Melissa,
I just came through a cold. I ran my normal training program
(48K a week) and had no problems. Infact my running helped
me to feel better and fight off the cold. Did not have to
take any medications but did run with a hankerchief because
of the increase in runny nose. I believe I read in Runners
World that as long as you dont have a fever, it is ok to run
as much as you feel like doing. The more I run the fewer and
the weaker my colds are.
Good luck. Remember a training schedule is just a
guide. I redo and change my schedule based on what
happens in my life.

Thanks for all your advice. I think I'll pop some lozenges,
vitamin C, and continue running.
Thanks again.
You seem to have confused this newsgroup with
rec.constant.whiners.

my personal attack on such things:
lots of vit. C garlic tablets to boost the immune system
hydrate even MORE than usual eat especially well for vital
nutrition to keep the body well cut back a bit on the
training so the bod can draw on its resources to
prevent/heal the cold rather than heal up from hard workouts
get extra rest/sleep don't worry!
repeat as necessary
best of luck... you'll make it

Those won't help, riding my monster will.

So Melissa, how big are they? And do they bounce nicely
as you run?

With no treatment at all, colds generally last about a week.
With elaborate treatment, they generally last about 7 days.

Check into recent research showing that Zinc, when taken at
the first signs of a cold, shortens the duration, at least,
of the worst symptoms.
For instance:
1) In Children: http://www.docguide.com/news/content.nsf/ne-

2) In General: http://www.coldcure.com/html/hand_4a.html
http://my.webmd.com/content/article/58/66373.htm
"In his study, published in the January issue of the medical
journal QJM: An International Journal of Medicine, patients
using Zicam, an over-the-counter nasal spray, cut the length
of their colds an average of 1.5 days compared with those
treated with a placebo. However, some patients slashed their
cold duration in half -- from six days to only three."
