Pain for 6 weeks now in my right leg?

View Full Version : Pain for 6 weeks now in my right leg?

I'm due for my annual complete physical in 3 months but I'd
thought I might try asking here first before calling my
Internist of 15 years. I apologize in advance if this topic
has been discussed before.

6 weeks ago I think over-did it working in the garage
(crouching like a baseball catcher up and down for a couple
of hours) and later that evening a sharp pain started in my
right rear buns that would go down to my toes.

I can also feel and hear a pop or click deep in my right hip
located a couple of inches to the right of the tail bone
area. It will pop or click when I lower my leg after a high
knee lift (like marching). It will also pop or click when on
my back while lowering the right leg after pulling my knee
up to my chest. I can also feel the pop or click when
pressing with my hands both from the front and back sides to
the right of my centerline.

There is no pain or discomfort associated with the hip
noise. Only this on and off again pain or tingling down my
entire right leg. Sometimes it only feels like the hairs on
my legs are standing up and sometimes it is sharper and
then it hurts to walk with pain shooting from my right rear
down behind my calf and under my foot. There is no pain
while in bed regardless of position or movements. For over
30 years I've used a pillow under my knees or between my
knees when sleeping and a firm mattress on a platform bed
(i.e. no box springs).

All-in-all though, I believe the pain is diminishing, but
since I've never experienced any real back, leg or nerve
pain before, I am curious if this could be a form a sciatica
and could the hip noise be part if it? I started taking
Motrin (400mg three times daily) about 3 weeks ago and it
seems to have helped.

However, I honestly can not say if the hip noise was there
prior to the garage incident. I probably would not have
noticed it since I don't normally go around high knee
stepping. Plus I've got a few other old age non-painful pops
and clicks ... one in my right elbow and one in my left
knee. I'm a 52 year old male 5'-10" and 170 lbs in good
health on no medications. My annual physicals coupled with
extensive lab work are always well within the normal ranges
and my Internist is always envious of me because I really do
not make any special effort take good care of myself and I
really should exercise more than my daily half hour brisk
walks. However, I've never smoked, drank coffee or sugar
drinks .... except for 3 or 4 alcoholic beverages weekly. I
use to experiment with some drugs in college, but that was
over 30 years ago.

I've read so many different things about the causes of back
pain and nerve damage that my head is spinning, especially
when reading about how so much of it leads to surgery
(something I'd prefer to rule out for now).

I'm thinking about some sessions with a good LMT next week
before calling my Internist, however any other ideas would
be much appreciated .... Happy Easter ... Thanks.

Hi, From what you described is sounds like sciatica in parts
does is hurt to sit? I would say (by know means am I a
Doctor or medical specialist) there are some nerve problems,
possible herniated disk/s in the lumbar areas. A bulging
disk will put pressure on the nerve root and this can cause
leg pain in ways you can not even imagine. The feeling that
the hair is standing on end is a nerve thing as well. I get
the Bee sting feeling on the top of my feet and I would
swear that a mass of bee's are at my feet, I have even
ripped off my shoes many times just for peace of mind to see
for sure no bee is there. When you develop a back problem
the muscles in the back will try to over compensate for the
problem, this will pull/push things all over the place in
the lumbar region. In many cases the herniated disk will
correct its self with Physical Therapy (PT) and different
medications. The Motrin will help ease the inflammation and
relax these muscles in question. I would go to my Doctor if
I were you. Enough time has passed that you feel it should
be better right? A good Doctor with a simple exam will be
able to tell you if this is something that is serious. All
Doctors if they are any good will get you going on some kind
of PT depending on or bad your symptoms are. This will range
from 1 time a week up to 5 times a week, in some cases more.
3 times a week is about the average giving a day between
each. At PT you may use Hydro Therapy as well. Again this
all depends on what the Dr. prescribes and what your
symptoms are at your first visit to PT. If the Doctor upon
your first exam feels there is a need for fast action he/she
will set up X-ray/s and or MRI. I will say think twice
before trying a Chiropractor and if you go that route INSIST
on X-ray/s before you have any for of treatment from any
type of Chiropractor. This pop type noise you describe can
be the facet joint or one or more of the many other areas in
the hip area. When your muscles are tight from the back
injury the other joints are restricted and movement is
challenged thus the noise. After the time you have tried to
let it heal on it's so far, for something no so sever you
should of made a little more progress than you have. I would
get to the Dr. if I were you. Don't even think about a
surgical procedure at this point. SO many things can be done
outside of that. Your Dr. will try other methods first. And
no matter what you always have that option of the second
opinion. PT you may find to be most helpful after 6-12
visits you could just find things all in working order again
and the pain gone. Your pillow is a great idea and the bed
too sounds right for it as well.

Best advice I can give is to: Please make that
appointment as soon as you can. This is something you
need to have checked out. Do not wait for the 3 months
till your annual physical.

My best to you in a speedy recovery. (Again by know means am
I a Doctor or Medical Specialist)

My guess is that this is ilio tibail band sydrome but i am
no expert. You can findout more here

http://www.footmaxx.com/footcare/ilio.html

I would see my doctor who may refer you to a physical
therapist (PT). I had an ankle injury a few years back and
my doctor referred me to a PT. I spent 8 sessions with the
PT who did a great job of getting me running again AND
answered every question I had about running. He was a great
source of helpful tips and educated me on what I needed to
do to keep running until I turn 90 (lol). My PT told me
about the ilio tibial band and how to streatch it before i
run. A PT is to a runner like a Pit Crew is to a Race Car
driver. Find a good PT and take him/her out to lunch, its a
great relationship for a runner to cultivate.

Good luck, keep us informed how it goes.

Dear Bud, Six weeks is usually long enough for most things
to heal on their own, so you may want to bump up your
appointment with your doc. A stronger anti inflam med may be
enough to let things quiet down on their own, plus when you
go in for the physical, you'll have had some medication
therapy and can discuss any further treatment if needed.
(hopefully not) A neat little trick for sciatic pain, is to
sit on a tennis ball (not kidding) right about where your
hip pocket is. Don't over do it though, it's been enough if
you start feeling tingling in the leg or foot. Another thing
you may want to do that may keep you from aggravating the
problem is move your wallet. Most guys use that hip pocket
and you don't realize how lopsided you sit till you move it.
Especially if its got lots of stuff in
it. It's doing the same thing as the tennis ball, but all
day long, putting a nice little wrong way curve in the
lumbar area. Vertically (the lorsis I believe it's
called) is ok, but side to side is bad news. I hope you
can use some of this and it helps, but I wouldn't put
off that MD appointment too long if you don't feel any
improvement. And don't sweat any surgery at this point.
There's a gazillion other things they normally try first
and then it's usually a last resort if you're even a
candidate for it.

Take Care and feel better--og

Thanks everyone for the help .... I've put my wallet (that
I normally carry in my left hip pocket) in the glove box
while driving and will bump up my physical this year. I
put a TheraCare heat pack on the lower back/right hip area
last night and slept with it for 8 hours and it really
helped so far today so I'll keep using those until I see
the Doc next week,

Thanks again,

Bud

If my butt clicked while marching, I'd stop marching. And I
don't think I even want to know why you were doing deep knee
bends in your garage for 2 hours...

Hi Bud,, I have suffered from sciatica for four years now,,i
too having a clicking popping noise in my hip every now and
then,,i can feel it just with normal walking tho, I have had
xrays on my hips and everything appears to be normal, if you
are still having the sciatic pain i would definately
recommend getting some xrays done and talking to your doc
about stronger anti-inflammitories. Hopefully its not
something too serious. Good Luck and TC, marianne

Good luck at your docs. My advise to you, if you have
insurance, is INSIST on a MRI. I went almost a year with
incredible pain in my Left hip/butt that shot down my leg.
The doctor did Xray and it showed NOTHING. I went through
months of PT., with NO RELIEF. I was afraid to ask for pain
meds. because the Xrays did not show anything (the doc. did
not offer it either). It went so long that I thought it was
all in my head and everyone else did also. Finally, my doc.
seen me about fall down (because of the shooting pain)- I
worked as nurse in the hospital, this whole time. After he
seen that he said "enough is enough" and finally ordered a
bone scan which right away showed rare thing called
"avascular necrosis", which they then did a MRI which showed
BOTH hips, had it. i ended up with both hips replaced. Let
me remind you that this is VERY RARE so I am fairly positve
that you probaly do not have this. I just wanted you to know
that DONT LET THEM ONLY DO A SIMPLE XRAY
