Well, almost. My new frame for the Stinger will allegedly be metallic
red; purely by coincidence I have also just bought a matching coloured
V70 to go with it :-)

To those who decry my environmentally unfriendly secondary
transport (tertiary, thinking about it, with train and bike
vying for first place) I would point out that according to
the Magic Computer it was averaging 38mpg on the way home
from the garage, which Ain't Bad for a 2 tonne 193bhp 5
cylinder 2.5 litre 20 valve turbocharged automatic estate
car (yeah, yeah, but it was cheap).

So now on the rare occasions when I drive I can enjoy
leather upholstered, climate controlled luxury,
electrically adjustable seat, traction control, and of
course cruise control, which makes it even easier to keep
within the speed limit :-)

No DAB though, until I fit the stereo out of the old car.

How do you find DAB Guy? The impression I've been given is
that with the exception of R3 the quality is inferior to FM
as a result of trying to squeeze as much as poss from the
available bandwidth, true or exaggerated?

Oh no - you of all people in a MDG ;-) Would the last one

Exaggerated, I'd say. Not hi-fi quality, but most radios
aren't (unless you live in an area where the reception is
unusually good).

My hearing is not entirely what is once was, but I really
don't notice the quality difference. The analogue radio I'm
used to is a Technics GT550 playing through a Mission Cyrus
1 and Tannoy DC2000 speakers. The digital radio in the
kitchen is a Pure Evoke and to be honest I find it different
to hear the difference except on Radio 3.

The big plus with DAB is that you get much less dropout; the
signal may be imperfect, but it's /uniformly/ imperfect,
rather than coming and going as analogue does around here.
The bad thing is that when you do get dropout, it just goes!

In general we have been entirely delighted with our DAB sets
(one in the car, one in the kitchen). BBC7 is a big hit with
the whole family.

I have had a variety of Seriously Expensive Cars with
Seriously Expensive Stereos, none have been able to maintian
decent FM reception of either R3 or R4 for an entire
journey. Ever.

That's where you're going wrong : my seriously cheap car
with moderately cheap stereo manages it fine. But then I
don't test it that often.

Believe me, I've tried cheap cars with various qualities of
stereo as well. Cheapish stereos with LW used to be the way
to go, but DAB is better.

LW doesn't support stereo.

Strangely, though, the stereos I had were all stereo capable
when playing tape or FM stereo. Did I mention stereo?

It's a simple technical fact that DAB is significantly
lower quality than FM, but like you I don't notice the
difference*. I know some people claim to notice the
difference but I only have the performance of my own ears
to judge by.

d.*except for the obvious difference that no stations
broadcast in stereo on DAB, except Classic FM, which
presumably pays a premium for hogging all the extra
bandwidth.

Those who write reviews in Hi-Fi mags can hear the
difference between different alloys used for component
connection cables, so they say. The mind boggles.

Really? I didn't know that, kind of limits its appeal except
for background music.

Are you sure? I've been listening to Radio 3 on DAB for some
time and not noticed it being mono. I can't check because
the new car doesn't have the DAB set in it yet and the
kitchen radio only has the one speaker, but the Radio 3
reception advice people say it's stereo and they are
/supposed/ to know.

I'm sure Radio 3 Digital broadcasts are in stereo and I
think some Radio4 is too.

We have David's DAB set plugged into his hi-fi. When we
listen to R3, I'm *sure* it's in stereo.

Um... come to think of it, maybe Classic FM is the
only station on the commercial multiplex that
broadcasts in stereo.

I don't think Classic FM ever is at all in the car.

So they say, but they find all sorts of risible excuses why
a double-blind test will prevent them from hearing these
obvious differences.
