Whiteface Race
View Full Version : Whiteface Race
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has done the race up Whiteface
Mountain in New York. This will be my first year, and was
wondering if there is anything I should know about the pace
of this 8 mile, 3000 ft climbing race? I am 25, and will
probably have my ass handed to me.....

I haven't done that race but I have raced up Whiteface twice
-- both times at the end of a road race of about 75 miles.
In both cases it took me about an hour and I was in 38 or 39
x23 almost the whole time. I know the winner of the race one
year did it in about 45 minutes mainly in 42x21. He was a
pro who had ridden some grand tours -- I was just a cat 2
off the back guy.
I am surprised that that webpage calls it Whiteface Mountain
as I have mainly heard people refer to it as just
"Whiteface."

The climb is simply fantastic and unlike those evil, steep
pitched climbs you can choose your pain depending on your
speed. I have raced up it during the Tour of the Adirondacks
about 14 years ago and have ridden up several times since,
as of a few years ago, to refresh my misery. The first two
miles up to the toll road gate are the hardest due to the
slightly stiffer grade and having to settle into a pace. The
rest of the climb is a very consistent pitch wise requiring
a (39x23,21,19), depending how tired you are at the moment.
The length and consistency of the climb are truly an eye
opening experience. In the Berkshire Hills, were I live,
steady grades of 2-3 miles are about the max.
This year I plan on entering the event, hopefully 12 lbs.
lighter than I am now! Looking at it optimistically, there's
only one climb and you have about 10K to spool it up for the
finish not a mere 200 meters.
