what other excersies besides walking do you do?

Me, I do some curcuit training without weights at home. I
use my body weight for resistance to do side lunges, squats,
push ups, close grip push ups and crunches. I have a
straight bar with a couple of weights that I use for bicep
curls. I do this about 4 times a week.

I do circuit training at Curves, a few exercise videos at
home but my main exercise in the warmer months is biking.
I'm a volunteer bike patrolman for the local metro parks
system. In addition to the bike patrol I go riding with my
teenage granddaughters frequently. The real workout comes
when I hitch up the bike trailer and haul the 2 year old
granddaughter<g

How do you like it? I've been very satisfied with it. I'm 61
and have been diagnosed with osteopenia and my doctor
recommeneded some type of weight training. I didn't want to
get into free weights but now that I've been going to Curves
for a few months I'm thinking about changing to a gym where
I can have a larger variety. I'm just not sure I want to
give up the convienence of Curves - in and out!

I like it because it is a comfortable environment and fun
and easy and quick...something i can actually stick to.
(If you are over 50) I do 10 - 12 hours a week at Gleaners.
I carry, lift, wheel, push boxes weighing from 10 -80 pounds
around. Good exercise and good work at the same time.
Sometimes they even laugh at my jokes.

FWIW, the founder and CEO of Curves, Gary Heavin of Waco,
Texas, is a heavy contributor to anti-choice groups
including "Operation Save America"
(http://www.operationsaveamerica.org/index.html). He also
once served a 6-month jail sentence for failure to pay
child support.

I have had this argument on various boards.... there are
very few business where none of the leaders contribute to
causes you may not agree with. it is there money and their
choice. if you boycott all businesses who have someone who
does something you disagree with, you will never be able to
buy or use anything ever. curves is awesome for women. if a
woman is so upset about what the founders personal beliefs
are that she wants to quit, fine, but it is only herself she
is hurting.

According to the sites referenced he had filed for
bankruptcy, lost custody of his children and spent 6 months
in jail for not paying child support. I would imagine many
people might be unable to pay child support if they're
bankrupt. I would think it was either brought up-to-date or
arrangements made to pay it when he was released. Being
behind in child support doesn't mean they don't care for
their kids. Sure there are those dead-beat dads who don't
pay at all but I don't think we can lump everyone into that
category when they get behind in child support payments. I
have no idea why the guy wasn't able to pay his child
support but it doesn't automatically make him a bad person.
I agree that if I boycotted the businesses who are headed by
someone I don't see eye-to-eye on with their beliefs that I
would find it difficult to buy things.
The snopes article put it this way.....He may support pro-
life endeavors but that doesn't mean Curves does.

The snopes.com site is pretty balanced, and generally well
researched. They cite several news sources for their
analysis on that page. A quick Google for "Gary Heavin" and
"child support" turned up a bunch of hits all listing the
same thing about the jail term. I was unable to find any
sites refuting
it.
FWIW - I'm not saying that women should boycott Curves (some
women would no doubt applaud the CEO's positions).
But given the significance of the issue, its delicate
balance vis-a-vis the Supreme Court, and the fact that
Curves is a women-only (but not women owned) business, it
may be an important issue for some women. Knowing where some
of their membership fees are going, some women may choose to
spend their exercise dollars with a facility that is not
associated with the anti-choice movement. Voting with our
dollars is a hallowed American tradition.

Not knowing the details of the case, it's hard to know. But,
in Texas (and most other states), the courts make allowances
for the payee spouse's financial situation. Serving jail
time for failure to pay child support is normally the result
of willful disregard of court orders and/or attempting to
hide income and financial resources from the court (for
instance, he might have been attempting to use the
bankruptcy to avoid the child support). I'm pretty sure he
didn't go to jail because he was broke...otherwise, there
would be a lot more dads in jail.
