View Full Version : 4 days without cycling.

Due to training and sick cover (my job is as a relief) I have done the last
5 nights on the trot. I commute by car on nights as opposed to bike when I'm
on days, mornings or afternoons. So all week I've seen no sky, heard no
birds, smelled any flowers or felt the spring wind in my hair. Aaargh, it's
like a form of sensory deprivation; roll on tomorrow afternoon when I can
get on my bike again. I do not drink when I'm on nights either, so that
first sip of beer tomorrow at 2300 will be like that one John Mills has in
"Ice Cold in Alex" :-)

SNAP! My final night is tonight (weekend off, restart nights
Monday). I use the bus for nights ... have only fallen
asleep and missed my stop once in 3 years.

And yes ... bring on the ale on Saturday!

The weather has been crap. You haven't missed much.
I'm bored of getting wet and struggling against cold,
wet wind :(

You've had cold wet wind? My favourite! The beer tastes so
much better the colder and wetter it is ;-)

Don't feel too bad. I spent a year w/o cycling due to a
"work related injury" (I do IT Support for a bank). It's a
long story but it started with tennis elbow (I don't play
tennis, hence the work related issue). I tried the natural
methods, but w/o taking time off work, it wasn't very
successful. Finally, after 6 months of suffering painI gave
in to the injection. Afterwards, I developed what was
diagnosed as advanced RSI with neck and shoulder
disfunction. Before the injection, cycling was painful,
mainly when I hit the breaks; that was agony. Then, with a
dodgy right shoulder and neck, it was impossible. After a
year of going from one physiotherapist to another, I found
an osteopath who diagnosed me and signed me off work for a
month last year. I still do treatment every now and then,
but I'm much, much better now and I can cycle!!! And I can
swim also!! And type (in a special keyboard and with a
special mouse.

In that year, only once I went on a cycling ride down the
Putney river path, and when I got back home, my arm hurt so
much that lifting a cigarette off the ashtray was agony!!
The hardest thing was looking at my bike (which I keep in my
flat) and knowing I couldn't ride it!

nerves. Be very careful. And sit properly when you are
typing.

So, don't feel bad for 4 days! :-)

I don't cycle when I do the late shift at work, which is
from 2-10. The reason is that I work in Canary Wharf and to
get home I have to go through Cable Street, which I don't
consider very safe late at night. I was once thrown a
cigarette to my face!! :-(

So that a week of no cycling to me.

And here's me thinking that the poor sods who used to go to
the Arctic Ocean for weeks on end during the winter in
trawlers had it bad ;-) Only joking!

Due to being on a business trip I had not been on a bike all
week. Then a saint in the office said he was going for a
bike ride today and had found a bike I could borrow. I went
straight to the bike shop, got pedals, shoes, water bottle,
shorts, top and gloves and have just enjoyed 45 miles in the
hills in the sun. Next time I travel there will be pedals,
shoes, shorts, cycling top, gloves and a tool kit in my bag
just in case, if not a whole Airnimal.

Now I just have to survive until Sunday, 7 days,
without a bike:-(
