Shin Splint Help Again

Joe

I have started running again and have put a couple of 30
mile weeks in. No intensity yet. Just easy running. Last
thursday and today (thur) I experienced some flare ups in my
shin. Last weekend they went away, even after a 13 mile long
run. This week they came back, but a little worse. Both
thursdays have been hot and humid. After today's six miler
it actually hurt. I have been running for five weeks and
this is the first time it has hurt.

Has anyone else experiences like this? Do you have ups and
downs? Should I just take another couple weeks off it again
and try again? This is really getting the best of me, since
I can't seem to figure out how to heal this damn thing up.
I'm such a frickin idiot.

No

You all make me feel bad. I am running 7-8 miles at least
every other day during the week in about 60 minutes. I
feel that my running is pretty intense...I know it isn't
going to win me any gold medals, but I feel pretty good
about myself...

As you should. It's all relative - in my first couple months
I found a 20 - 25 mile week (no speedwork or anything) to be
"pretty serious". It was strenuous and yes, quite intense.
Just like any other sport, as you improve what was once very
hard becomes routine.

Why do you have to go 30 miles a week, right away, after not
running at all for a long time? Why not start up with fewer
miles, get used to it again, and gradually ramp up the
distance? It's just like starting the first time.

Your body is trying to tell you something. Listen to it.
Pain is your bodies way of saying that you are over-doing
it. While you are rebuilding, you need to do less on each
workout day, and take more rest days.

When I feel my shins begin to hurt I know Im over doing it
and I need to back off my training schedule. But I am
still able to run, I just run for three or four weeks at a
local high school track. A track that has a football field
in the middle. These fields in my area are made of a super
cushony rubber under an synthetic grass surface. I run on
the edge right next to the track but still on the field.
Its like heaven run on and gives me a rest from the
pounding that i need.

Good luck,

Jim
