wow.. just did a search on this newsgroup:

Results 1 - 100 of about 1,290 for nipples
group:rec.running. in rec.running

had no idea that this was so widespread. I was driving the
other day with my buddy and I asked him if it ever
happenned to him. He said, yea! what's up with that? his
brother gets it too!

For me, the problem seems more prevalent when it's
warm outside

I get it when I run and sweat a lot in a humid
environment...and when the sweaty shirt touches my nipples
for a long time during my run (and then after as well). I am
guessing the only way to avoid them completely is to remove
your shirt once your sweat has drenched that area of your
shirt AND to keep it off....

I keep seeing this topic and wondering if I am still in

Micropore tape does the trick for me.

The funny thing is that I've heard the sore nipple
discussion on rec.sport.disc as well. Ultimate players have
the same problem with chafing/bleeding due to wet fabric -
usually cotton. Clearly, players don't run as far...but most
tournaments last between 7 and 9 hours.

However, missing nipples is an also an occassional topic.
People lay out to catch the disc and rip the little suckers
right off.

it's nice to see the crossover advice (band aids are the
ulti players favorite as well).

Try Champion friction free T shirts. I've run 1 marathon and
2 half marathons with this T shirt and have not had to use
vaseline or anything else. The shirt uses a panel of nylon
or silk or something like it around the chest area.

Prior to that I would have streaks of blood on the front of
any race T shirt I used when running this length of run. It
got so bad that I was developing calluses on each nipple!

Ham String

The nipples are elevated over the remainder of the chest and
are thus a pressure point for constant rubbing on sweat-
soaked fabric. It gets worse as your sweat evaporates and
leaves behind trace amounts of salt. After five or six
miles, you are rubbing your nipples against a brine soaked
cloth. Some guy don't get sore nips, but a lot of us do.

Solution: sport strip band aids. Make sure they are cloth
bandaids. Don't use plastic or sheer band aids, they come
off. The cloth bandaids have survived 18 mile runs. (try to
remember to rotate how you apply your band aids, or you'll
end up with a couple of odd looking rectagles on either side
of you nips.

Miss Anne Throp

I wouldn't call the problem widespread. After all, your
nipples can't be more than 10 or 12 inches apart.

Robert.Clark

A couple of simple & inexpensive band-aids, or some medical
tape, works just fine. (You just have to remember to remove
them before the post-run dip in the hotel hot-tub ... non-
runners giving you strange looks and/or your wife trying to
signal you as you walk across the pool deck will clue you in
that you have forgotten!)

I usually remembered around mile 10 when things were getting
a bit raw.

Yeah, Micropore tape is the best, and it's way cheaper than
band-aids. It never comes off if applied properly to dry
skin (initially). Also less painful to remove. A $3 roll
lasts me a year or more.

Use "Body Glide". You can get it at any running store.

Sport tape, micro-pore tape, cloth bandages all work ok

imo, the "liquid skin" stuff works best. (several, repeated
applications)

then, later, nail polish remover to get rid of it.
