my martial arts instructor wants me to make my running
target "the six minute mile". he wants me to do the 2 1/4
miles that was run on saturday mornings in about 14 minutes.
i told him sure just because he's my superior in the chain
of command, but i don't know if he's just setting the bar to
a different level because it's me or whatever.

Simple curiosity - what does he think is magical about a 6
minute mile?

When do these goals have to be achieved? What is your
current mile time? What is your fastest 400 meter time (once
around a 400m track)? Keep in mind that a mile is 4 times
around a 400m track + about 10 meters. What is your current
training like? Do you have any other issues that could
impede your progress towards this goal, such as weight?

It's probably whatever. ;-)

Yeah, I'm with plodzilla. It seems like an ill-thought-out
goal for someone who just started running regularly last
week and runs 12:30 miles right now. A 6-minute mile might
not be impossible, but it's not something that you could
probably do in one year, or even two. That's roughly
equivalent to about a sub-20 5K? That's really quite an
accomplishment for a female "recreational" runner
(especially if running is your "secondary" sport!) One of
the group female regulars just broke the 20-minute barrier,
but she trains very hard (currently at 60+ miles a week) and
presumably has been building toward this point for a number
of years. I'm sure the regulars will all know plenty of sub-
20 women 5Kers, but I bet most of them have been
running/training for years.

Training like a maniac is an oxymoron - training should be
controlled and carefully evaluated with attention to stress
on the body.

Then why not a 4 min mile? To say 6's when you are running
12's is a big stretch. He should set small goals like 11's
then 10's and then see what reasonable. Setting such a lofty
goal puts the carrot on a 20 mile stick.

Ahhh, "few months" is very short term goal in running - less
than a training cycle usually. "Distant goals" tend to be
multiple years.

Just learn about training. Start slowly as you're doing.
The improvements will come. If you're just starting
running, the times will quickly improve, but you may hit
plateaus along the way.

Maybe he's setting up a long-term goal (multiple years) for
you. Not sure if your other achievements were done overnight
(relatively), and this is now a test of being able to handle
long term planning and goals. If he's really a serious
runner, I think he realizes that and *might* offer training
suggestions since he knows you better than any of us could
possibly know your abilities / needs. (Or he may have gone
through the school of hard knocks, and may not have a good
training plan ideas. Dunno.) This might be a test to see if
you just start blindly running hard or if you methodically
learn about training and set up intermediate goals.
Most important, learn your recovery rate and don't do too
much too soon, or you'll be back here with an injury report.
Although you may be in decent overall shape, if you haven't
been running, you'll be using muscles / tendons, etc in new
ways. Cardio is generally *not* the limiting factor for
newbies. I think the slowest adaptation is generally in the
tendons based on what I've read. That is, just because you
feel good and on a high, be aware that your tendons (and
muscles) may not be ready to go more until you've been doing
it for a while. Your MA may have you in some condition so
your adaptation might be a lot faster than some.
It's not an impossible goal (depending on your age, which I
can't remember), but learn to enjoy the journey of the
intermediate steps, as it looks like you are doing. You
might find you really enjoy longer runs as you develop
endurance.
Enjoy.

I see that you are highly motivated. However, without
direction, your self- motivation could cause a problem,
particularly an injury due to over training. Pay close
attention to what Dot posted. The only thing I'd add is that
you should have a plan/program. There are some good books
available that will help you out. That, combined with
helpful responses in this newsgroup, will help you to
achieve your running goals.
