running out of clicks....
View Full Version : running out of clicks....
I am not quite sure how to describe this (latest) problem.
Basically I use 9spd dura ace bar end shifters in sis mode.
However the shifter is only giving me 5 clicks (or 6 cogs
depending on how you want to look at
it..) I have taken the shifter hub to pieces and everything
looks ok although I am not entirely sure what I should be
looking for. Does anybody have any idea as to why the
shifter is running out of clicks so to speak?
Thank you all :)

Have you made sure shifter and derailleur is in top position
before connecting cable?
Sorry, that's all I can think of. Good luck.

Obvious questions but you never know.
Do you have a 9 speed cassette ? Do you have a Shimano rear
mech ? Is your rear mech hanger bent in any way ?

I have taken the shifter right off the bike. I thought it
might be something to do with the rear mech, but thought i
would test the shifter anyway. I can't get 8 clicks out of
it at all. One for my LBS i think because i don't really
want to buy new shifters. :(
cheers for your efforts guys

If you are only getting 6 clicks from a 9 speed lever I
suspect they are upside down ;-)

I had this happen to me, with Ultegra bar-end shifters. You
may have removed your shifter when it was at a mid-position
rather than in the highest gear (min cable tension). Since
you can only refit the shifter in this position, the
internals get out of sync. I solved this by refitting the
shifter, tightning the cable, pushing it round until I ran
out of clicks, removing it again and resetting it at the
bottom. Repeat until you get all your clicks back!
In the meantime, you should be able to use your shifter
without the clicks as a friction shifter. I doubt the
Dura Ace BES units are significantly different to my
Ultegra ones.
Good luck.

I tried that but no luck. Taken it to two different bike
shops and their assesment is the same. Part is broken
need to replace. I might use this as an opportunity to
buy sti levers. anybody know where I can get a decent
pair for cheap? :)

xpedia has 105 for £99. should I bite the bullet and buy at
that price or hold out for a better deal?

David - I reckon David's right. There's a washer bit in the
middle that can go back in more than one place, and if you
get it wrong you get the symptoms you describe. I worked it
out after taking it apart and putting it back together a
couple of times. Although I could be thinking of the LH
lever here, I think the RH has the same thing.
If you want to spend 100sq+ on new shifters, can I put in a
bid for your broken ones? (Yes, this is me putting my money
where my mouth is saying 'I bet they're not broken', but I
need a part for one anyway!)
Oh - the only difference between the Dura-ace bar ends and
the Ultegra bar ends is the label and the number of clicks
- they're exactly the same otherwise, even down to the
price afair.
cheers, clive

That's very good. Are they Flight Deck compat? Not really a
problem if you don't want to use Flight Deck.
Can't find them on there. I find the xpedia website so
difficult to use that I usually get frustrated and give up.
