Lovely ride

View Full Version : Lovely ride

Yesterday the Unfit Family took part, with loads of others,
in the EDP Ride for Life in aid of East Anglian Children's
Hospices. The cycling club we belong to sponsors EACH and
helps organise the ride. It was glorious. We did the 33 mile
on-road circuit.

Started from Santon Downham in the Thetford Forest at just
after 8am, route took us up to Mundford, past the Iceni
Brewery to Cockley Cley and the half-way house at
Beachamwell with its thatched roof church. There was a
refreshment stop with tea, coffee, water & home-made cakes.
Then on to Oxborough, down to Weeting, Brandon and back to
Santon Downham.

It was quite lovely. The day was *warm* but the light cloud
cover stopped it from being too hot. Hardly any wind, so it
was ideal cycling conditions. The morning dappled sunshine
through the forest was just the thing to raise the spirits
at the start of the ride. Getting out on to quiet country
lanes, lined with hedgerows full of hawthorn in blossom gave
a truly wondrous scent to the air for much of the ride.
Norfolk is quiet beautiful at this time of year and is
perfect cycling country.

Our good deed for the day was to sort out the saddle on the
MTB of a guy having trouble and in pain as a result of said
saddle being incorrectly set for him. The second half of his
ride was more comfortable than the first, once Vernon had
used a spanner from my toolkit to sort out the problem.

At the start Nathan sped off away from his slow parents, but
we met at the halfway point to keep him stocked up with
supplies of cake. Once he was refilled, he sped off again
and finished quite a bit before his mum & dad. At the end he
was refuelled by a large portion of black cherry ripple ice
cream and a chocolate flake...

It would have been good to do a second lap, so to speak, but
as Nathan needed to get home to do the dreaded revision for
his GCSEs, we stuck to the one.

Today looks like another glorious day and I can't wait to
get out there on the bike again.

Cheers, helen s

Sadly, I was suffering from a severe dose of
GetOnWithThatBloodyKitchenOrElse syndrome; so spent the day
chiseling walls and running ring main :(

Did you cycle from home to Santon Downham, or did you cheat
and drive?

Certainly was a lovely day - looks set fair for the
week here in Norfolk, so I'll try and pack some miles
in this week.

See you around the lanes maybe ;)

And once you've finished that, there's a kitchen in my house
requires finishing too ;-)

We cheated - Nathan needed to get on with the GCSE revision.

Indeed! You know that if you are passing through Wendling,
you can call in for a tea/coffee/loo stop - take us as you
find us. Vernon is likely to be at the computer (or today
sorting out the tumble drier which is making some very
strange noises).

I wasted my allotted quota of bike time this weekend fitting
new brake calipers, levers and cables, plus bar tape. It
took bloody ages to get the brakes set up correctly (note to
self: invest in a set of cable-pullers) and by the time I'd
got them sorted it was decreed from on high that I had no
time left to go out and play. :-(

Haven't ridden for a week! And I won't have much time to be
going out riding during this week either. But I have got
special dispensation from the management for some serious
riding time next weekend (a whole day, no less) so that's
something to look forward to, at least.

furniture. :-(

Snuck out at 8am to join Myra on a Cambridge Cycling Club
"C" run - an unofficial not A or B run run. About thirty
miles so I would be back by lunch. Ended up doing 50 miles
with 8 ladies and two guys with an excellent "double helping
of cake stop" at a garden centre after 30 miles. Good job I
remembered to lather on the sun cream before I left - three
and a half hours cycling in the midday sun - and a bit
worried about the fate of some of the others who hadn't.
Glad I decided to leave the fleece in the car at the start
as it was warm warm warm.
