And he came around Petacchi and McWhiner to do it! That's a
quality win.

Please show a little courtesy and list the entire podium in
the header, not just the stage winner.

Unbelievable.... what's up with that? The guy's been getting
like 9th in the sprint stages.

Amazing.

Sounded like he showed some nuts and jumped early. He had
2 bike lengths on Petacchi and Peta couldn't close the
gap fast enough. I think it helped that it was uphill
into the wind.

Usually headwind means to go late, but uphill
complicates matters.

Indeed, nothing cheap about it, a very prestigious win.

A shame for Petacchi he had to feel annoyed about making
tactical errors rather than congratulate Fred on doing
something few so far have done. I guess graciousness doesn't
come easy to him.

i, er, fell asleep until the very end of the race today, and
waking up i was very surprised to see petacchi getting beat.
i'm glad i held off reading rbr until i watched the video!
anyway, after i woke up, i watched the slow mo a few times
cause it's so cool to see him just come out of fourth
position and hold everyone off to win :)

It was unfair because McEwen was under scrutiny after
yesterday, so he wasn't allowed to cheat.

Comments I've seen from Petacchi have rarely (ever?) been
arrogant. From http://www.cyclingnews.com/road/2004/giro04/-
?id=results/stage9

"Well once in a while, anyone makes a mistake. Fred was
smart to jump early and I probably should have gone
earlier and risked a loss - but I waited and Rodriguez got
two bike lengths on me. I came back really fast but it
wasn't enough. He took the risk and he won."

Duking it out in that kind of melee requires a level of self-
confidence that must border on arrogance anyway.

How he figured he'd get away with that one...

I read that as Petacchi giving Rodriguez credit for doing
what he may have known he should have. Petacchi seems to
be a pretty good winner, but he's not so bad a loser.

I'm not sure FF would agree: Then as Fassa came back up to
the front, the last guy to come around me going into the
corner was Petacchi. So coming out of the last corner I
found myself on Petacchi's wheel, but right away McEwen -
the little boxer that he is - fought for the wheel. Now in
the past, I'd wasted way too much energy fighting for
Petacchi's wheel, so I just settled in on McEwen's.

(BTW, I actually won the VeloNews "pick the stage winner"
contest for Saturday. My pick? Petacchi. Impressive, eh?)

Nothing rivals the well aged wine of Cipollini..."I wanted to come here with different teamates."

They must love that guy at the team dinners.

Considering what Aug did for the team would you blame him?
Cipo's the big dog on that team, no matter how you stack
it, his presence keeps the sponsor's money flowing in and
in turn keeps those riders employed. Bittersweet pill, no
doubt, but when you are the marquee rider and go to a
grand tour for one reason only, why not give him the
riders he wants?

Your points are well taken and I agree that the team management should have taken his requests into consideration and given him what he wants, but that said, yes, I do blame him for publicly denigrating his teammates who no doubt were doing their best under the circumstances.
