Damn it, after hearing him restate his ambitions for the TdF
I really thought he was going to show some good form. This
is just pitiful.

He could always race Beloki for Lantern Rouge.

It's early; not even June yet. Ask Jan if you don't
believe me.

At this time in 2002 and even 2003, he was starting to show
flashes of his form. Right now he has nothing. You may be
right, but I kind of doubt
it...

Today he did a little better, finishing at the rear end of
the 99-strong peloton with Zabel as the winner, but the
stage was only half the length of yesterday's stage and
that's really not where he should have been at any rate...
he should have been mid-pack with teammates Klier, Klöden
and Wesemann...

Sorry you missed the sarcasm. I'd be surprised if he even
shows up for the Tour. Setting aside the psychological
aspects of coming back after such a crash, the deep, soft
tissue injuries in his pelvic area will take a while longer
to recover fully. I'd look for him next year or maybe at the
Vuelta this year.

I think we're talking about different riders, unless Botero
had a crash I didn't know about.

Also, I noticed something when I checked Heras' palmares in
researching for another thread. Last year, he had no
significant results until early June at the Volta a
Catalunya (he took 2nd place as defending champion), and
then nothing more until the Vuelta a Espana... this is
pretty much how he has been throughout his career, starting
to show glimmers in June in time for July, leaving enough
energy left for September... so his season has traditionally
followed a similar arch to Botero's.

The difference, of course, is that Botero didn't ride the
Vuelta last year.

No one's perfect... I make countless mistakes, and I have
yet to reach my 21st birthday. If we just correct each other
without getting competitive about it, then we all benefit...

Indeed. At least it was another Spanish name beginning with
the letter B.

I do hope Beloki can come back but having fractured my
pelvis in a cycling fall, I know how long and difficult the
healing process is for deep soft tissue. Five years on, I
still get a twinge now and again, particularly when
climbing. He does have relative youth on his side, but it's
a long road back. Coppi also fractured his pelvis. Can
someone, Benjo?, elaborate on Coppi's recovery timeline?

It was Lafferty who had the crash we don't know about....

With the major difference that Botero is/was supposed to
be challenging for GC, while Heras was a climbing
domestique till The Vuelta, wg=hen he was expected/allowed
to rider for GC.

Also true. He wore number 21 as designated team leader in
the TdF... that's not going to happen again, I don't think.
But I hope that he at least manages to win a time trial, or
at the very least, take a good road stage like Simoni did
last year... I'm criticizing him quite a lot, with good
reason, but I really want to see him do justice to his
ability and his history.
