A Tour of California.

Hopefully Theshold will have a press conference at their
wicked new Vail race to supply more details.

Awesome !

IIRC, the Vail race was cancelled due to lack of
sponsorship.

Yesterday California began it's latest advertising campaign
extolling the virtues of "buying Californian" with Ahnold
himself taking part in the latest commercial, so a bike race
with him as governor...? Not unlikely.

With everything he's done over the years to promote fitness
and exercise this seems to be a perfect fit. I hope that he
leans on some of his friends to provide the sponsorship
cash, and I think he will as long as it's run well. Bill C

Probably work out nicely, we've got pretty much any terrain
you could want out here. Just hope they don't have to dope-
test the gov.

For a long time I've thought they should do something like
this. Hwy 1 in particular would be great for a road race.
Besides being one of the most beautiful roads in the world,
it's a snap for TV coverage -- just shoot the whole thing
from a helicopter flying along the coast. The scenery alone
would pull viewers in, race or no race. I can think of no
better advertisement for the state.

This could be the best thing that has happened to US bike
racing so far. Maybe this will get the attention of the US
sports fans that cycling is tougher and better than mindless
football and basketball.

The new Home Depot ATD Velodrome is also a great big plus
for cycling and track cycling especially.

Football or basketball? What about that great dull
spring/summer/fall epic called Basebore? I've got no really
interest in pro-football and even less enthusiasm for
basketball, but basebore is like watching paint dry in slow
motion and the "sport" is rampant with doping.

One major difference I've noticed since moving from Michigan
to California, in 1997, is that on average Californians are
far more active in outside activities. The Sea Otter Classic
seemed less than it should have been, but on any given day
there are runners, cyclists, mountain bikers, surfers,
hikers, etc. etc etc out enjoying the great weather that
lasts from April to December.

I expect a tour of California (which I actually envisioned a
few times as more of a west coast tour, from Seattle to San
Diego) could have each stage combined with lots of local
activities like Fred rides and getting manufacturers and
bike shops out show off the goods.

Hmm. Sounds like I should try to get involved.

Bixby bridge (near Point Sur) is about all of Hwy 1 they
every use and it's on everything. (Wow! Go see the bridge!
whee!) California is made for outdoor tourism, there's more
here than Disneyland. It would be pretty cool to run a stage
through Death Valley. :-)

With a special skills handling clinic by George W.
especially for John Kerry, who also biffed a month ago on
his road bike.

Irony is a terrible thing to waste.

Didn't I read earlier this month that the Governator Ahhnold called for a special investigation of the Balco scandal? How's that for irony?

Probably checking to see if his name is on their list.

For a guy who gives the impression of keeping fit, it was
somewhat of a surprise years ago to see he had heart
bypass surgery.

http://www.tinajuanfitness.info/articles/art031198.html

Corey Lawson

I think he actually had a heart valve replaced. At the time,
the concern was, "pig valve works best, but needs to be
replaced eventually." "metal valve works OK, but doesn't
need to be replaced. Oh, and you can hear it clicking from
about 10 feet away".

He chose the pig valve.

Death valley would rock, with a finish up the 13 mile climb
to whitney portal!

I often camp for a week down there in the late fall. A great
place to ride. Bring water and sunscreen. :-)

The road south of Furnace Creek is pretty rough, suitable
for mountain bike tires unless you have extra thick chamois,
but in other directions is great.
