View Full Version : Bike Insurance?
Hi all,
Just after buying my brand new bike I had a thought whilst riding through the town – what if someone hit me in their car?
Can I claim of their insurance for my injuries, can I claim for my bike too or do I need to take out private insurance?
Many thanks

You need to join the CTC (htttp://www.ctc.org.uk) because
yes you can but you have to be prepared for a long and
intimidating battle with the insurance company. CTC
membership not only supports our being represented but also
provides free legal support in such situations. It also
AFAIR offers public liability insurance should it be your
fault and there is a big repair bill to the car (but that if
often part of any household policy too).

It does (£ millions).

Yep, the CTC gives third party insurance free when you join,
as well as the claims service. If you're under 26 it costs
only £11 [1]
Mark.

You can.

Yes you can claim for that too.

Your own insurance is not needed if the injury/damage is
definitely caused by the the car driver.
I was knocked off my bike a few weeks ago, the bike was
totally wrecked and I suffered with a cricked back for
several weeks. The driver was forced to admit that it was
her fault due in part to the nature of the crash [1] and the
fact that witnesses actually stopped and gave statements to
the police. I pursued the claim from her insurance company
by myself and I won a pay out large enough to replace the
damaged bike with a new one with enough left over to make my
back feel a bit better.
In different circumstances where the blame is not so clear,
I think the insurance company would have fought much harder.
I would not have been able to achieve any sort of
satisfactory result without professional help.

[1] The car ran into the back of my bike while I was waiting
to move onto a roundabout. I doubt that a counter claim
that I reversed into her car would have been very
successful.
