""" Student, 20, dies in crash with bus
St Catherine's College student Emilie Harris, 20, from
Hampshire, died at just after 4pm yesterday in the John
Radcliffe Hospital.
The accident happened just before 3.30pm in Cowley Road,
outside the Elm Tree pub.
An inquest into Miss Harris's death is due to be opened next
week by Oxfordshire Coroner Nicholas Gardiner.
The driver of the Oxford Bus Company vehicle, which was
travelling from the city centre towards Cowley, was shaken
by the accident but not injured. No passengers on the bus,
on route 5 to Blackbird Leys, were injured.
Part of Cowley Road from The Plain to Marston Street was
closed until 6pm to allow police officers to start
investigations into how the accident happened.
The closure resulted in some congestion of surrounding roads
during the rush hour.
People who use Cowley Road regularly have spoken of the
dangers of the heavy traffic for pedestrians and cyclists.
Major plans are being drawn up for safety improvements.
Mick McAndrews, city and county councillor, passed by
shortly after the collision. He said: "They gave the victim
as much first aid as they could."
Mike Hyde, 25, who cycles down Cowley Road every day to get
to work in Oxford, said: "In term time the road is pretty
crowded -- you have to be careful. "It's the density of
traffic which is the problem, and the thing with buses is
they are constantly stopping and starting."
Alison Coveley, 34, who lives in nearby Princes Street,
said: "It is a busy road. You do have to make sure you look
each way lots of times before you cross."
Green county councillor Craig Simmons, whose division
includes the scene of the fatal accident, said work on the
planned improvements was expected to start in the autumn.
He added: "We need to push ahead without delay and I will be
urging the county to act with the utmost urgency."
Sgt Peter Jell, of Thames Valley Police Roads Policing unit
at Abingdon, said: "We don't yet know the circumstances of
what happened. It's obviously very early days in the
investigation."
The driver of the bus and passengers will be spoken to as
part of the inquiry.
Sgt Jell urged anyone else who had seen what happened,
including drivers following the bus or travelling towards it
in the opposite direction, to contact police.
Nigel Eggleton, commercial director of Oxford Bus Company,
said: "Obviously at a time like this our thoughts are with
the family of the cyclist.
"We are fully cooperating with Thames Valley Police in their
investigation. The bus involved was fitted with CCTV cameras
and the images we have downloaded from those have been
passed to the police as they continue their investigations."
Mr Eggleton added that the company would be conducting its
own internal investigation into what happened and that the
bus driver would be offered counselling and support.
Any witnesses to the collision should call police on 08458
505505. """
