View Full Version : Trek 7210 hybrid?
Hello,
a friend in search of a good solid, but not too pricey,
commuting bike spotted one of these in the LBS.
http://www.trekbikes.com/bikes/2004/citybike/7210e.jsp He
asked my opinion. All I could tell him was it seems sensible
(no suspension forks, rack & mudguards supplied) and Trek is
a solid brand as far as I know. Anyone have direct knowledge
of this model or care to offer an opinion? The info on the
Trek site regarding componentry is very limited. It's
definitely a cheap end of the range model (c. UKP250) so
would I be right in assuming it has screw-on freewheel type
hubs? thanks for any help, tony R.

No, it's a seven speed cassette. This uses a freehub, a
design generally considered to be superior to screw on
freewheels as (1) changing gear clusters is easier and (2)
the freehub has a bearing to support the end of the axle
closer to the dropout. On a freewheel hub, the bearing is
much closer inboard, resulting in a longer unsupported
length which is more sussceptible to bending.
I bought my son a Trek Navigator 200 the other week. Similar
price range, similar spec. Well put together bike, good
quality but not top drawer components.

Much as expected then. Although I think getting cassette
type hubs at this price level is pretty good (I had warned
friend that he should expect a screw-on freewheel - which I
personally loathe). Thanks for the help Tim,
tony R.
