V brakes and canties

As some of you may know, I shortly to take delivery of a new
bicycle. Thanks to the mutterings of this group, I have
decided to spend more money than is wise on upgrading the
brakes form v's to hope minis[1] so this means I'll have a
spare set of v's lying around.

Now I have a mtb in the shed that has been sadly
neglecteted for varoious reasons, and this poor beast has
canti brakes. The question is, are the bosses for canties
and v's in the smae place? Can I replace the canties on the
mtb with the v's? It seems a shame to waste an opourtunity
to upgrade the mtb.

1. Hope minis. do I want mini monoes or straight hope minis.
What's the diference. The GH has 20" wheels btw.

I have both, or rather had, as the Speedmachine now has an
M4 on the front. Both are excellent. Difference in price is
negligible, but the Monos look way blingier and probably
have fewer seals and stuff to be potential Things That Go
Wrong. If you are Large and/or given to repeated stops from
high speed, investing an extra tenner in the four-pot M4 may
be a Good Thing.

Indeed, the bosses are in the same place. But you will find
the brake levers from the cantis will not work correctly[1]
with the Vs unless the Vs are slightly unusual ones.

Not that new levers are that expensive.

[1] That is, you won't be able to stop with them :-)

The 2 part caliper is joined with bolts and sealed with an
o-ring. Braking action tends to force the 2 caliper halves
apart with a risk of leaks developing from the o-ring.
Whether this has been a problem in use I don't know but I've
got Mini Monos and can vouch for the bling value ;-) http:/-

Make sure you replace the brake levers too. Vee's pull a
different amount of cable than canti's and using the
different levers gives either a decent 'feel' or makes them
damned awkward to modulate braking pressure.

Well, you can - but the pads have to be set very close
to the rim and the brake will feel spongy as the
mechanical advantage of this combo is higher than the
designers intended.

Apparently the old DX 2-finger levers are OK with Vs, so if
your MTB is really old you could be OK. If they pull at
least 29mm of cable the levers are good.
