Building Cassetts
View Full Version : Building Cassetts
What do I need to build a cassette? I am looking at building a 14-27 and a 14-25. I currently have full 2003 shimano 105 kit it. As you can probably tell, I am really new to the whole mechanic thing with my bike, though I am not new to riding and racing. I have friends who do this a lot who can help me in actually doing it, but I want to know what I need to get and such.
With 9-speed cassettes, some of the cogs may be on carriers and it might not be possible to customize exactly how you want. Check out http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/k7.html#9cassettes for some customized cassettes and loose cogs to do your own customizing. That page also shows that 14-25 is already a standard cassette (just not very popular).

What are some of the biggest things I need to remember? DO I need to buy a lockring or something to reach up to the 14?
Marchisio brand ti cogs are avaialble as loose cogs for bothe campag or shimano splines. Marchisio also have shimano or campag compatible spacers. They're a little bit pricey cos they're titanium but are relatively cheaper compared to stcok titanium cogsets by Campag or Shimano.

Actually I do know that the 2003 and newer 105 cassetts have the upper 5(for cassets with a 12 as the small cog)6(for those with a 13 as the smallest) cogs on a carrier
ok it looks like I will just buy the ultegra 14-25casset, which has its 25 and 23 rings loose, then a carrier with the 18-19-21 cogs and then a second carrier with the 16-17cogs and then the 14 and 15 are loose (well there are also spacers and such but I am not gonna try to describe the whole setup)
a couple more questions I would like to ask
1)is it possible to swap out the top two loose cogs to say make the cassett a 14-27or28 for climbing and then put the 25 back on for the flatter days
1b) if the above is possible, should I swap out both the 23 and the 25 to avoid having a 4-5 tooth jump from the 23 to the 27, and what combo would probably best
2)Is it possible to take off the 25 and then put a 22 between the top carrier and the 23?
Im sorry if I sound kinda dumb, but I have only been riding for about a year, and am finnaly trying to learn some of this stuff. The whole reason I need to do this is for junior gears (as I race as a junior).

The closest current Shimano cassette would be the 13-25 of the 105 line:
<http://bike.shimano.com/product_images/CS/si_images/CS_HG70-9R_SI.pdf>
or..... Lickton's carries an Ultegra in 14-25:
<http://www.lickbike.com/productpage.asp?PART_NUM_SUB='2293-01'>
and scroll to near the bottom of the page.
Take a look at this http://www.panix.com/~jbarrm/cycal/cycal.30f.html
Also it seems to me it would be less work to put on a smaller crank ring.
Good for you for figuring this out now, everyone has to start somewhere.

The whole reason I need to do this is for junior gears (as I race as a junior). Why doncha go to Sheldon Browns site at www.harriscyclery.com and click on casettes. There is a listing of loose cogs and what can be done with rebulding. If it's possible hes done it and may even have it for sale. Another possibility is to use cogs and spacers from sram 9 speed shimano compatible casettes, as the ones I have are held together with a single removable pin.

Are the pins in a 105 cassette the same thing as the carriers in the Ultegra/DA cassettes? Can the Ultegra cogs be dis-assembled in the same manner as the 105 cogs?
