Clearly.

Perhaps. It appears that Mayo, while on the big ring, is
also in a fairly large rear cog. He may have about the same
effective gear as a rider on the small ring in a smaller cog
given the ten speed clusters in use today.

Looks funny though, Mayo sitting in big ring and the rest
standing in small ring.

Not unusual, since we all know by now that Lance favors a
higher cadence. Fly-weights often turn the big gear
because they can.

According to Vaughters, he advised Mayo to take it easy on
the early part, go hard on the last part. Looks like Mayo
may have just been spinning at the 9 Km mark (as GW notes.)

This is generally my approach to climbs, get spinning a few
Km before the worst to get the heartrate up then go 100%
over the last bit of the
climb. Don't recall where I picked up that idea, but it
sure works better for me than trying to hammer all
the way up. I'm no billygoat.

Phonak rides BMC, but that didn't appear to carry any
labels. Prototype?
