I remember a small survey of L'Equipe on the eve of the
final TT in the Tour of '89.All the experts (about 20 or 25)
predicted Laurent Fignon would win the Tour, with one
exception: Jan Raas who voted for Lemond. Since then I don't
believe experts anymore (expect Jan Raas of course).

Those DM won't make the podium. Ducrot must refer to a
former Ventoux winner. But he won't make the podium either,
not this year. May have the strength for a top-5 and will be
given more freedom than the big guns, but still lacks
tactically to really benefit from that.

Peter Winnen doesn't really want to be believed; he prefers
to produce fiction. Jacques Chapel and Danny Nelissen both
try to be the Pim Fortuyn among sports commentators: 'I am
going/any which way the wind may be blowing' and Michel
Wuyts doesn't have an opinion, just his calculator and some
accumulated Flemish cycling knowledge. Gerrie Knetemann
just rolls
dice. Still I'm surprised that so few predict Petacchi for
the green jersey. Fassa Bortolo can and will pull him
through the tough stages. What else can they do?

It's interesting that Peter Winnen, the only climber among
the experts, is the only one who is tipping the climber Iban
Mayo as a Tdf winner, confirming the principle that people
are usually attaching great importance to what they are good
in themselves.

Flemish cycling knowlegde shouldn't be unterestimated.
Besides Michel Wuyts wrote quite a nice book last year.

Chapel from Langs de Lijn and Radio Tour, Nelissen on
Eurosport, yes. http://cgi.omroep.nl/cgi-

Eurosport's audio/video links unfortunately don't seem to
work for now. There should be a few words from Nelissen on

I'll bet money they are thinking of Denis Menchov.

Sorry, couldn't resist. RBR is the real authority,
after all. ;)

As much as I like Aitor Gonzalez, I have to leave him off my
short list for now. He just doesn't seem to be in great
shape at the moment. Santiago Botero doesn't seem to be in
form either, as he fell off of the TdS breakaway today.

1st - Lance Armstrong (USPS) 2nd - Jan Ullrich (T-Mobile)
3rd - Michael Rogers (Quick.Step-Davitamon)

Polka dots - Erik Dekker (Rabobank) Green jersey -
Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) White jersey - Michele
Scarponi (Domina Vacanze)

Team classificiation - US Postal

In what way? Didn't I only pick one for each position?

I do see a mistake in putting Rogers in 3rd and a different
rider in the white jersey... it would have to be Rogers
given this result...

-Sonarrat.

Hmmm.

1. Jan Ullrich
2. Tyler Hamilton
3. Iban Mayo (*)
4. Lance Armstrong

KOM: Heras Green: O'Grady

To add the required candyass component, I'd have to say I
can't pick a young rider and the asterisk on Mayo is
probably going to be a dope control.

That's all total stupid bull****, and whoever believes in it
is the ultimate gullible stupid. Proof: if you pick 1st, 2nd
and 3rd horse of a race in the right order you win much more
than if you pick only the winner. This obviously means that
the first kind of prono is more difficult and hazardous than
the single pick. Andrew Albright can shine my car.

But if you pick them in the wrong order you get nothing when
there is money on the line.

But in here, when someone picks the podium, and they're
close but not spot on, then the whinging begins ... "but I
was close, now wasn't I?"

As if there was actually anything on the line...

I believe in any case that Iban Mayo will win. He's a
thrilling rider who doesn't hold back all season for the
sake of Le Grand Boucle - he just goes for it whenever he
feels like it.

I also look forward to being pleasantly, or even
unpleasantly, surprised.
