Webb won the 1500m in Ostrava in 3:32.73, 6th best American
all-time, the fastest time in the world this year. He led
the entire last lap and RAN AWAY FROM Bernard Lagat and Noah
Ngeny. Lagat tried to catch him and couldn't.

Webb right now is the best in the world. It's been a
loooooong time since anyone could say that about an
American miler.

He had so much potential a couple of years ago, I'm glad to
see that he is back to performing well again. Let's hope he
doesn't peak too early, i.e. before Athens.

Who are the other 5 (besides Scott)?

Very impressive, thanks for the update. And in the same meet
Bekele broke the 10,000m record after breaking the 5,000m
last week. More meet news here: http://www.channelnewsasia.- (http://www.channelnewsasia.-/)

Well, he has the fastest time in the world so far this year.
El Guerrouj might have something to say about crowning Webb
"the best in the world."

Still, a great run by Webb.

He has the fastest time in the world this year, but I think
there is a certain Moroccan out there who might take umbrage
at Webb being called the best.

Regardless, glad to see him having a good year. I predict he
makes the finals in Athens.

What do you mean, "besides Scott"?:-) IŽd have thought that
_the_ American 1500m runner was Sydney Maree!

I must also wonder (at least just a little) why a Finn
should know more about the (fairly recent) history of U.S.
T&F than an American:-)) I can easily name four of them:
Maree, Scott, Steve Holman, Jim Spivey - and I have a hunch
that David Krummenacker is the fifth.

By the way, that article says that Webb is 29 years old,
which can't possibly be right, given that he was breaking
highschool records in 2001 and isn't mentally retarded. ;)

Brent Peterson

It's a mistake. Webb is 21 years old.

A simple typo. Webb is 21.

Hicham El Guerrouj ran his first race of the season
yesterday, in 3:36. You were saying?

BTW El Guerrouj's wife gave birth to a baby girl a few days
ago, so his mind might be on other things. Is this going to
affect him in the Olympics? We'll see. In the last few
years, he opened in 3:32-3:33.

Webb is doing very well, but the Olympics is a whole new
ballgame with the lack of pacers. In Athens experience will
matter more than in the European races and my money would
still be on El G. But who knows? Webb ran by himself in the
Home Depot Invitational; I didn't see the other two.

With the Games rather late, I am sure his periodized
program is adjusted accordingly. The birth of the
child would affect him more if he had been the one who
gave birth.

Those would be their team affiliations; note Jim Spivey's
AW, presumably Athletics West. Steve Scott was with Tiger
Track Club, Jim Ryun at the University of Kansas and Seneca
Lassiter at Arkansas (think I got all those right).

It's not the type shoe, it's the company the runner has
signed a contract with.

There'll be pacers. They just won't drop out after 2 laps.
