Treatment for Callous on Ball of Foot?

View Full Version : Treatment for Callous on Ball of Foot?

Josh

I've developed a small but increasingly painful callous
right in the middle of the ball of my left foot. It
protrudes just a small amount, and the diameter is only
about 1/8". No bleeding, skin cracking, etc. It seems that
the problem is well under the skin, instead of on top of
the skin like a blister. Is there any over the counter
product which is effective for these things, or will I have
to see a doctor?

I'm not a hard-core runner; only do 3.5 miles twice a week
in Nike Air Pegasus.

See a podiatrist to treat it. Meanwhile, try using corn or
callus cushions (little donuts) to relieve the stress on
the area. bj

That's quite an endorsement for those Nike kicks of yours.

You may also have a wart. Callouses tend to form over a wart
(or is it warts tend to form under a callous?). Get it
diagnosed before trying to do anything for it. And make sure
it's not affecting your running mechanics. I had a
wart/callous, kept running, and started to plant my foot
differently. I ended up with an irrated tendon or ligament
in my foot.

What has worked for me with plantar warts and callouses.

Presoak in epsom salts or just water, or go for a long run
in the rain. Using a one-edged razor blade, carefully scrape
off as much as you can, without cutting healthy skin. If a
wart, it will return; then, use compound W gel (OTC
treatment in white tube at your local Rx, an acid) with a
small piece of duct tape over it. You can do it daily for
many days, or, even 3-6 times in a single day to start. Put
only a very little amount of gel on the callous. Each time
you take off the tape, some of callous comes off as well. If
done properly, you feel no pain. Disinfect your shower,
bathroom, shoes, shoe liners, slippers, and change your
shoes if you can.

For other cures, visit www.drweil.com, and search for
plantar warts.
