Seeking runner's diet
View Full Version : Seeking runner's diet
I am starting a jogging routine. However, I can't get my
eating under control. Can any experienced runners point me
to a good way of eating for new runners who want to burn
fat? Thanks for your help.

Not an experienced runner, but I always thought it was
the results of running that burned the fat, not the
eating ;) The more you run, the more calories, including
fat, you burn.
If you're trying to lose weight, then eat a balanced diet
with fewer calories (moderate portions) than what you burn
during the day. If you keep busy with activities like
running, that will tend to keep your hands out of the cookie
jar also - as does getting a good night's sleep.

Dear Stealthy,
Anytime calories burned is more then calories eaten you will
lose weight. Start reading labels and understand what it is
your eating. Setting a limit of say 2000 calories a day just
try and keep to that while you begin an exercise program.
Write it down so that you can add it up at the end of the
day so you know you were under or at the 2000 calorie
amount. I was surprised that when I wrote it down I
immediately became sensitive to high calorie foods. You will
find, I think, what works for you (ie what gives you energy
and what does not) so that you balance calorie intake for
the level of exercise you are at. As you get more active and
you learn more you will refine this and be more selective as
you search for those foods the give you running energy
without the weight gain. Just keep in mind that your diet
needs to be balanced and should include all the food groups.

Eat your favorite carb snack food right after your jog. Just
make sure its not doritos or something loaded with fat. I
have my favorite pretzels right after exercise when the body
can suck it up and store it as glycogen efficiently. Aside
from refueling the muscles, eat 3 reasonable meals a day and
- here's the killer for me - don't eat at night. Also start
doing some calisthenics or weight lifting a few times a week
as that can help boost the normal metabolic rate.
