superstition
View Full Version : superstition
Does anyone know if cyclists are in general more
superstitious than other sporters.
If so: why?
I would be interested to hear your opinion about this.
Have their been books written about cycling and
superstition?

Many believe that riding a bicycle brings them Very Bad
Luck. A substantial minority of cyclists attempt to ward off
this Bad Luck by the wearing of Lucky Magic Hats. It is my
opinion that it wards off some Bad Luck, but is inneffective
at warding off Very Bad Luck.
I attempt to ward off Very Bad Luck by using Lucky Looks
Over The Shoulder and Lucky Hand Signals before doing
relatively risky things like changing lanes or making turns.
This seems to ward off both Bad and Very Bad Luck.

People are more superstitious about activities where
success or survival depend on luck, than where it's just a
matter of effort or planning or preventive maintenance or
traffic sense.
So experienced cyclists are a bit superstitious but not as
superstitious as hedgehogs.

Right, it's your fault is it? I rode the best part of 30
miles this afternoon with only one change of gear at the
front, and that required a screwdriver.
