UNIVERSITIES SEE TUITION, FOOD BANKS The study, produced by
the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations and the
Canadian Association of Food Banks, shows that in March of
this year, university food banks served 3,121 students. Of
those students, 44 per cent had children of their own.

CANADA'S FIRST INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR RECENT IMMIGRANTS TO
LAUNCH NEXT WEEK The Career Bridge internship program
addresses current labour market demand for internationally
qualified professionals and also responds to the needs of
experienced recent immigrants seeking to launch their
careers in Canada.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS LOWERED TO ATTRACT STUDENTS TO
CAMPUSES Ontario universities are increasing the
competition, and in some cases lowering the entrance
requirements, to attract students to their campuses after
the mad rush last year to accommodate the larger-than-usual
high-school graduating class created by the double cohort.

FIXING IMMIGRATION KEY FOR HARPER Companies that require
technical staff, universities needing lab technicians and
communities desperate for physicians are all affected, he
said. The provinces cannot solve this problem alone, he
added. The former Ontario health minister noted immigration
is ultimately a federal government responsibility.

GOVERNMENT OF CANADA HELPS YOUNG PEOPLE IN SASKATCHEWAN
DEVELOP JOB SKILLS Human Resources and Skills Development
Canada is providing financial assistance for these projects
through the Skills Link Program. The Skills Link program
helps youth facing barriers to employment develop the broad
range of skills, knowledge and work experience they need to
participate in the job market.

CANADIAN JOBLESS RATE EASES TO 7.2%, U.S. RATE STAYS AT 5.6%
AMID SOLID GAINS Canada's economy created 56,100 jobs in
May, nudging the unemployment rate down by one-tenth of a
percentage point to 7.2 per cent - the lowest rate since
July 2001, Statistics Canada said. The news helped prod the
Canadian dollar up by about three-quarters of a cent against
the American dollar, topping 74 cents US for the first time
since mid-April.

BusinessWeek online says that in a bid to expand their reach
and customer base, Indian companies are buying US, Canadian
and European companies – often hiring more workers there.

CANADA'S REFUGEE BOARD FACING NEW RACISM ALLEGATIONS FROM
EMPLOYEES In human-rights complaints and labour grievances,
at least four black and other non-white employees in the
refugee protection division of the Immigration and Refugee
Board say they have been subject to harassment, ghettoized
in lower-level positions or denied permanent status.

WARNING AIRED ON ‘CAREGIVER SCAM' "It has come to my
attention that a number of these caregiver-training schools,
which attract enrollees by offering to arrange employment
for them abroad once they finish the course, may actually be
involved in a scam," Albert warned in her weekly briefing
with the diplomatic press corps on Thursday.

RULING AFFECTS `OUT OF WEDLOCK' APPLICANTS A Federal Court
ruling delivered on May 17, but made public only recently,
orders the citizenship department to grant Canadian
citizenship to people who can demonstrate that they were
born outside Canada to a Canadian father, out of wedlock.

IMMIGRANTS IMPORTANT TO ECONOMY, SURVEY FINDS While skilled
immigrants face great difficulties finding jobs in the
Greater Toronto Area, they play an important role in keeping
the economy growing, according to a survey of attitudes
toward immigration.

VISIBLE MINORITY WOMEN MOST LIKELY OUT OF WORK: STUDY "The
gap in labour market outcomes for foreign-born visible
minorities may be related to incidents of discrimination or
unfair treatment," the report says, "According to the Ethnic
Diversity Survey, about 20 per cent of visible minorities
aged 15 and over said they had sometimes or often
experienced discrimination or unfair treatment in the
previous five years because of their ethnicity, culture,
race, skin colour, language, accent, or religion."
