Cane Creek IS-6
View Full Version : Cane Creek IS-6
For over a month I have had problems with my '03 Klein Q Pro Carbon Team (custom paint). The headset had to be replaced, and therefore I ordered the Cane Creek IS- 6 headset. The problem is it was delivered with two 41.4 mm diameter bearings (upper and lower), while the odd Klein style uses a 44mm diameter lower bearing.
Do anyone know where to get the right headset for my Klein? Have I bought the wrong headset? The shop where I bought the IS- 6 had never heard of the 44 mm bearing. I'm pretty frustrated as I haven't ridden my beauty for over a month.
I would wonder why a 1 year old headset is already worn out? I have bikes with over 10,000 miles on them without even looking at the headset. Maybe I'm lucky. That said why not start with Klein since they're the maker. Perhaps there is a factory number or email where you can contact them. Tell them your problem. If its an odd size you may have only a few options. By the way did the bike shop order this or you?

Klein Bicycle Corporation provides each original retail purchaser of the bicycle a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship in the bicycle frame and rigid fork when the bicycle is purchased from an authorized Klein dealer. Klein Bicycle Corporation likewise warrants all original parts, excluding suspension forks and rear shock absorbers, for a period of one year from the date of purchase. Suspension forks and rear shock absorbers shall be covered under the stated warranty of their original manufacturers. Paint and decals are warranted for one year. This warranty is expressly limited to the repair or replacement of a defective frame, fork, or defective part and is the sole remedy of the warranty. This warranty applies only to the original owner and is not transferable. Claims under this warranty must be made through an authorized Klein dealer. Proof of purchase is required. A warranty registration card must be completed and received by Klein Bicycle Corporation before a warranty claim may be processed. This warranty covers bicycles and components purchased outside the United States only if they are purchased through an authorized international Klein distributor or Klein dealer within the country of purchase. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, improper assembly or follow-up maintenance, installation of parts or accessories not originally intended or compatible with the bicycle as sold, damage or failure due to accident, misuse, abuse or neglect or modification of the frame, fork or components. Klein Bicycle Corporation shall not be responsible for incidental or consequential damages. Some states do not allow the exclusion of incidental or consequential damages, so the above exclusion may not apply to you. This warranty gives the consumer specific legal rights, and those rights may vary from place to place. This warranty does not affect the statutory rights of the consumer.

They use a proprietary headset. Top part is Cane Creek IS (2 or 6), bottom part is the hugely oversized one and is bonded to the fork. You have to replace the entire fork also if plan on changing the headset. Same situation as on the old Trek 5900.

If you have deep pockets, you can contact Reset Racing, a German engineering firm, (www.reset-racing.de (http://www.reset-racing.de/) / info@reset-racing.de) to see if they have a replacement headset (~$100US!?! is my understanding).
