View Full Version : Just getting started... what bike to buy?

I am trying to determine what bike to buy. I haven't owned a bike since I was in grade school and am very excited about taking up a new hobby this summer. When I first started shopping I was a little surprised about how much new bikes cost and have since increased my budget to about $600. I'm flexible but since this is a new hobby I don't want to spend much more.

I've looked at the Trek 1000, 1000C, and Specialized Allez Triple. Would one of these be a good choice for a beginner or is there something else out there I've missed?

Also, I'm not sure if it matters but I am about 6' and an athletic 210 pounds.

Thank you for your help in advance!

I think the reason nobody is helping you is that this question is asked all the time. Try using the search feature to locate almost the same questions.

This link will prob answer a lot of your questions

I'll help a little, I'm kinda tired of answering these type of post. First, welcome to the board, and to cycling, dont let the rough start here bother you.

In fact, I tell you what, read that thread I listed above, and post any questions you have here, and I will make sure to answer them. :)

Maybe there should be a stickied "new road bike" thread. It might reduce the number of these. Then again, people would have to be looking in the right place and actually notice it. Just an idea.

Thank you for your help in advance! One bottom of the barrel bike is pretty much like another brand. Some brands may be better bang for the buck than others. Sometimes it's better to shop for a bike shop that will give you long term support and comfort rather than bike brand. Some are happy long term with lower end or 'entry level' bikes. Others buy one and immedaitely start throwing money at upgrades, which is not cost effective. Many buy a double and then realize they need a triple:more money wasted. Others buy a triple and decide to ditch it for a double:more money disposal. One point in favor of a low end bike is that if it becomes a garage ornament you have wasted less money, but better stuff usually provides more long term satisfaction, and less need or desire for costly ' upgrades'. You are the only one that can sort all this stuff out.

I just went through the same thing you are. I went with the Trek 1000 and got it for $499. Had it for about 2 weeks and have been riding about 12 miles a day on it. Very nice bike. I tried out the Specialized, cannondale and Giant in this price range and the Trek just felt the best.
