Fancy having an open-air event on the same weekend as
Wimbledon and Glastonbury! How stupid can you get? Now my
temperature is back below the hundred Fahrenheit mark and I
can stand without assistance, I can look out of the window
and think that perhaps after all I'm glad I'm not at York!

Aye, feeling better now mate?

We had to be on a loser with the weather didn't we? - I
managed a 50 yard test ride on the new bike this afternoon.

Went to York today, 'twas a bit wet. Met up with John Senior

The Butler is off the road waiting for me to fetch the new
wheels from Bob (who is off sailing at the moment, lucky
lad). The "other" Butler is OK though.

Saturday was pretty dire, but the parade this morning was
fun (forgot to bring the fish windsocks though, drat) and
the weather was a lot better. The only URC'er we managed to
collar was Richard Corfield (Hi Richard!) but we caught up
with a lot of other folk and I stocked up on El Cheapo track
mitts. *And* we managed to get home about ten minutes
*before* the thunderstorm started, so not a bad weekend
really....

I think I saw your trikes outside the refreshments tent this
afternoon. There were two trikes, full loaded with Carradice
luggage and fish windsocks, just before it started to rain.
I couldn't see their owners and I couldn't remember who said
they would have fish socks.

We left about half twelve or so, so probably someone else
:-)

When I say I forgot them I meant completely, not just for
the parade (yes, I'm a twit!). We don't usually use them
when just riding, they're too big and draggy...

I had (mismatched) Carradice panniers, and Rob was pulling a
Bob Yak trailer because he was riding the GT3 and we don't
have the rack for it yet.

I have a feeling I was near you before the parade. Right
hand side of the road about 5m (or less) up from the
junction amongst the collection of various trikes?

Sounds about right - I was the small round person in the
Cycle Vision 2004 t-shirt (which was just the right shade of
green to clash nicely with my trike frame :-)) and a hat
covered in badges. Rob was the tall thin beardy person
similarly attired.

Shortly before we set off I was Explaining Things to a
lady on a tandem who was expounding the But They Can't
Climb theory...

I was the nervous looking bloke on the recumbent bike who
was waiting for a larger gap before moving off for reasons
of control. In the event it was fine, but I did fancy taking
people down at the start of the parade.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I was expecting there to be more
recumbents present. There seemed to be an enormous number of
people present who had never seen one until the rally.

I had a quick look at the 2 wheeler recumbents in the trial
area, but didn't get a chance to go on one (lack of
attentiveness from the demo people who just looked too bored
at the time to bother getting up, even when I asked). It
does look like something you wonder how you're going to
balance on, but looks fun once you've got the knack.

ICE's back to back tandem was certainly impressive! As was
their child extension. Hopefuly in the not too distant
future we'll have a chance to try that out. I was going to
try the Micro, having heard that a lighter smaller trike is
quite a bit more nippy, but knowing full well I'd be
disowned by the wife if I even thought of it!

Ask the same question about any bike though... do you
really /think/ about how you balance an upright, or do you
just do it? Other similar questions I get asked include
"how do you start off?" and a reply of "just like any other
bike" is treated with a degree of skepticism until I
explain and elaborate further to show they really are the
same in more ways than people think: "one foot down for
stationary balance, push off by pedalling with the other,
first foot up onto the pedals as you head off, just like an
upright bike[1]".

Pete.

[1] if you don't do rolling mounts. I do, on uprights, and I
do miss being able to get on and underway all at the
same time. But not as much as I miss a big comfy chair
on an upright.

I wasn't overly impressed with the Bikefix mob. There didn't
appear to be anyone at the try-a-bike section who actually
worked for the company and they did seem to spend most of
their time lounging around. Because there were no
representives of the company there, my questions regarding
the sizing of the HPVelotechnic seats were answered with
dumbfounded stares. Granted Bikefix were unlikely to sell
anything there and then, but someone who was directly linked
to the sales side of things wouldn't have done any harm.

The easiest thing is to have someone support the bike as you
start and push you up to speed. This will give you the
balance and let you feel what the bike is like. After that
it's just a case of learning to start without assistance.
From my experience I reckon that within 5-10 minutes you'll
have few problems, and after about 30 minutes you'll
probably be confident in traffic. My problem was that the
"traffic" was closely packed, slow moving cyclists and I
prefer to have a little space to start with in case
something does go wrong.

Monster... Monster... Monster... Monster... damn good fun!
Now I need to play on a proper low-rider bike.

I thought there were a fair few recumbents about (although
possibly not as many as last year), but then we were
hanging about with people we know, who tend to be recumbent
riders so....

I thought the trade stands looked a bit sparse this year,
which might explain why a nice lady rang me up a few weeks
ago and tried to sell me one.

The veggie food stand was missing too. I suspect they've put
the fees up too high and people aren't bothering....

I'd agree on the trade stands. I thought there were more
societies last year. Were the Tandem Club there this year? I
didn't notice them. It took us a lot less time to work our
way around this year.

The Monster really is a monster - it looks quite big. That
big lightweight rear wheel must help a bit though. The Micro
may go on a train though, especially if it can be dismantled
easily, and that shiny blue/green one with the suspension on
the stand inside looked really smart.

Trice must polish their trikes for display, or keep
them meticulously clean, as mine looks a bit more mucky
in places.
