What are these new type 'speed' cameras?

A nearby stretch of road has aquired a large number of
'speed' cameras. There are two distinct types, the normal
sort and another sort, distinguished by have two round
windows, this sort have three parallel lines on the road
instead of the familiar ruler road markings. What are they?

They sound like 'SPECS' cameras which come in pairs and
average a drivers speed over a distance, rather than at a
particular spot. They really do have an effect on speed
reduction.

They're helmet-cams, being set up and ready to come into
effect on June 31st 2006. The lines on the road are simply
to disguise their true purpose.

Because that's when they reckon the income from speeding
fines is set to level off

The cameras the OP is talking about are Truvelos. Take your
photo as you head towards the camera, speed is sensed with
piezo strips on the road and the three parallel lines are
used as a secondary check (distance that the tyre has
travelled over the lines in between the two photos IIRC).
Specs cameras look like security cameras with IR lamps
either side, and are mounted on gantries high over the road.
Generally a lot more than a pair IME (Nottingham), though
they might just use pairs for things like roadworks.

OK, I guess you're right .. I couldn't remember any road
markings with the specs, but the 'round windows' description
reminded me of the IR lamps either side of the cameras.

I know the specs cameras in Nottingham .. ;( They work in
pairs for the speed calculation, but, as in Nottingham, they
tend to use them in quite a few locations around known
'trouble' spots.

Not according to the new Euro Calendar that's going to come
into effect on April 31st 2006 it hasn't.

Oh and the fines are going to be in Euros as well by the
way.
