Well, at least during the race that's what they called me.
Give me a radio and send me out on the course to direct
traffic and I become a totalitarian. It was the
Beginner/Citizen/Friend race that they needed the marshall
for. I just stood at the corner and told everyone where to
go. (I'm good at that).
I got polite "thank you"'s from a couple of riders. Some of
the gals flashed me their pearly whites as they rode by.
Others gave me a sheepish grin as they rode along... "Funny,
but that guy looked faster in warm-up". I radioed that an
injured rider was coming in to the start finish area (the
kid hurt himself half-way around the loop, but apparently
decided to "ride it off") Lots of people, bikes, and
questions to keep me interested.
Then, when they were giving out the prizes for the various
catagories I decided to radio in and ask if I could leave my
post, pick up the signage, and come on in to "headquarters".
The short story is that they forgot to tell me that the last
riders were in, so I'd been standing out there basically
keeping the grass from floating away. Heh-heh-heh... It was
time for lunch!
Had a fun time, and saw several bikes that were worth far
more than the cars that carried them to the event! I think
the kids under 11 were the most fun to watch. Helmets askew,
bikes too big, going to beat the band... Lots of fun. And so
intense in some cases.
Well worth the time to volunteer.

It usually is. We have a few races/running-down-the-road
type of things here every year, and I usually finish up as a
traffic cop for the day (less exercise than competing...)
Great fun,
Steve "Good on ya, Rog!"

Save for the SingleSpeed, I paid more for my last 3 bikes than I did for my
last 3 cars
