Stalin was criminally insane, and his brutality was not
ideologically driven. Had the system been ideologically
fascist, the result would not have differed significantly.

In the post Stalin era, life in the Soviet Union was
civilized. While consumer goods were in short supply and
often of poor quality, no one went without the basic
necessities (unlike the US and other capitalist countries).
Freedom was certainly quite constricted, but then this has
been true of many civilizations.
