My dads hip is aging on him. Not crippled or anything near
it but he says he knows it will give him major problems
within 10 years.

Is there injections or antibiotics or something locallized
he can do to help recover his hip. The way he talks, he
damaged it from yanking the heavy lawn mower out of the
ditch. I imagine that it is a bunch of fine hairline cracks
in that hip socket.

Has he had the affected joint checked by an orthopaedic
specialist? His description of a possible injury would
suggest a muscle or other soft tissue problem more so than
any bone damage. Arthritis & DJD spring to mind as other
likely culprits.

Such joint problems may go unnoticed by the patient until an
injury to surrounding tissues/structures occurs -- then the
underlying problem rears its ugly head.

There have been tremendous advances in therapies, ranging
from PT to meds to surgery. The first step, of course, is to
have your dad thoroughly examined to determine the exact
nature of his hip problem(s).

Good luck!
