Jan has squawked for years about hospital errors ar ekilling
and injuring patients and then claims that the health care
providers are doing nothing about it.

I have pointed out that many hopsitals are, and she has
demanded proof.

As of July 1, 2004, (and it should have been sooner) the
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations has promulgated new rules designed to
drastically reduce the number of such situations.

Now, all hospitals seeking accredidation must run through a
series of checklists for surgical preparation, in the
operating room and post operatively, in addition to having a
check of the identity of each patient before any medication
is administered.

What distresses me is that Jan Drew did not know this, or
if she did, did not post it. I would expect such a
champion of health safety to know about these things and
be glad to post it.

Some of the guidelines:

Guidelines to prevent surgical errors The new surgical rules
that take effect today require:
. A preoperative verification process in which two
identifying facts, such as name and birth date, but NOT
hospital room number, are checked for each patient.
. Clearly marking all sites to be involved in a surgery when
the operation involves body parts of which people have
more than one, such as hands, fingers, feet and toes.
. Having a "time out" before starting the operation and
having a final verification of the patient, procedure,
site and, when applicable, implants.

The purpose of the "timeout" is not to punish anyone, but to
go down a pre-operative checklist like an astronaut does
before launch.
