Lantus and Arthralgias (body pain)

View Full Version : Lantus and Arthralgias (body pain)

I have been using Lantus for the past three months while in
other countries and now here. I have had severe body pain
especially low back with Sciatic involvement. Pain in the
buttocks and down the leg to the ankle with severe oedema.
The swelling is becoming less with the elimination of Lantus
and several days use of Bumex. Walking is very difficult and
I actually have almost ataxic movements. Stopped this
Insulin for three days and much of the problem has resolved.
I also have FM but now have very limited range of motion in
extremities. I am in PT and have been advised to use the
pool and Jacuzzi but I hate being in water other than a
shower. How about the use of a Gazelle? Anyone have one and
used it successfully. It is used by many of the spinal
institutes for a walking like exercise with no joint
compression. I will be exchanging my Tunturi exercycle for
another type with an upright seat position as this backward
extension hurts more that it does good. Really don't want to
go back on the pump while traveling as it is so inconvenient
but then I don't need Lantus.

Thanks, Quilty

Guy

In any case, you should not use a drug you think is causing trouble.
Most of us don't see these problems.. I do have a lot of problems but
they were there before Lantus. Consult with a good doc.

Quilty, I've been on Lantus for a few years, and have
never had a problem with it. Sorry that it has not gone so
well for you.

In regards to the Gazelle, I have never used it. However, my
sister (she has a bad knee) LOVES using it.

Quilty,

I haven't seen any reports similar to yours anywhere in the
literature, or on the FDA site.

Lantus is now the #1 most prescribed insulin in the USA, so
there is quite a large experience with it.

While the probability is that your symptoms are from a
different source, it would be a good idea to get check by
your doc, and have him file a report to the FDA on Medwatch.

Hey Quilty, I was told last week to up my swimming as well.
I have a lot of pain in my si joint area and I too get tired
of swimming and thought about the Gazelle. Let me know what
you find out ok. I am in abed a lot of days due to the pain
is so intense. My hips lock and I ache so bad..... Swimming
at least keeps the muscles from turning to mush.

Thank you,
I have run through the problem with my Endo and its a "hands thrown
up in the air thing." I noticed in one report that this was a problem
and whether it was listed in the prescribing info or another report I
can't recall. Short term memory and all that. I will keep on looking
for the report in Medline.
This is almost textbook symptomology of Sciatic nerve involvement.
Will continue to root about until I find an answer. I am not fond of
the pump as one gains too much weight and the excessive amount of
supporting equipment hauled around to keep it going is cumbersome.

Your symptoms are very much like mine. Are you using Lantus?
Will let you know about the Gazelle. I am planning a visit
to the Spinal Institute of the Desert where they use it a
lot. I just don't want to buy another piece of exercise
equipment that I won't use. Will let you know what I find
out. Kilty

Steph, Thanks for the info on the Gazelle. Does it provide a
no impact work out as is implied? Did she also lose weight
using it? Need to do that too. Using the pump caused a
weight gain. Kilty

According to my sister, it is no impact. And, yes, she lost

Quilty,

There actually is a large body of literature about sciatic
nerve pain in diabetes. This is a common problem in
diabetes, and is typically self limited. It can be an
extreme nuisance for the duration.

IMHO we see less weight gain with pumps compared to previous
years because we push carb counting harder now. In the "old
days" we used a preset meal dose plus a correction factor
for the glucose. Now we use carb counting that matches the
food and insulin dose better, and people need fewer snacks
to reverse hypos.

Thus pumps might deserve another look.

the odds are that doc biggs ir right, but strange problems
can and do happen with new insulin and tend to take anywhere
from 2-to-6 years (or more) to get recognized

that's certainly been true with both "human" insulin and
more recently with these weird analog insulins, the oldest
of which is lispro

i wouldn't do that until you have some real confidence that
the problem is caused by Lantus

i.e. that the problem is either being caused *fully* by the
use of Lantus, or possibly by some more complex thing
where Lantus is only partly at fault

assuming you are type-1 and using Lantus 2x (which is how
most type-1 diabetics are using Lantus), to my mind the
easiest way to find out about Lantus would be to ditch
Lantus completely and go to using Lilly's "human"-UL 2x

for one thing, all of the UL insulins ("human" and pork and
beef) are more robust and don't have to be babied like
Lantus does, not to mention that "human"-UL costs about half
what you have to pay for lantus. fact is that only beef-UL
is flat at the 24 hour mark with 1x dosing

if Lantus has any real advantages over any of the UL
insulins, i'm so far still unaware of it

even though "human"-UL is sold OTC in the USA, be sure to
check with your real doc before switching insulin. :)

Thanks again for your cogent reply. I have a MM 508 and will
be getting a new one as the present unit seems very prone to
ESD. I will return to its use when I finish my PT for this
back. Prior to my disconnect I was using Quick-Set and loved
them. So easy to use when you Jacuzzi and do pool exercise
every day. I stopped the Lantus for two days and evidently
there was enough residual to last a couple of days. Don't
know it there is a wash-out time with that Insulin or not.
The Sciatic problems and other nerve involvement are very
common as I understand especially after the 25+ year mark. I
do have increased risk for spinal problems due to rather
severe Osteo of the L & S spine. A number of facet
involvements and the usual and customary supportive
problems. As to the carb situation I just can not justify a
LC diet. Too much protein at this late date and my kidneys
will object. So I do modify this type of diet with mainly
chicken in small amounts and wild salmon in larger servings.
I just can't do without carbs as some do and evidently
successfully so, for now. In our house we make our own
breads and find certain types of starches just fine. Again
much thanks for your help and good info it is definitely
appreciated. Kilty

Actually the FDA, and most docs, prefer to report any
problem that happens, even if it is possibly a mere
coincidence. Most of the time it is unclear whether there is
any cause and effect, particularly on new drug products.

If the FDA gets enough reports of the same problem, it will
launch an investigation into the issue. You don't have to be
sure that there is a cause and effect.

If we didn't have this kind of reporting, it would allow
potentially dangerous drugs to stay on the market longer.
Rezulin got pulled because of the Medwatch database reports
that were accumulating.

Even if it doesn't cause removal of the drug from the
market, it might cause a warning statement to be issued that
would benefit any future patients when they consider taking
the product.

I make reports any time I have even a suspicion of a problem
with a product or a drug. I have made reports on insulin
pump infusion sets, Zyprexa, insulin pumps, thyroid meds,
and Rezulin, among others.

I also search the product reports if I suspect a problem, to
see if it has been described before.

Reporting is easy, simply visit the FDA web site.
