Still Tired - Normal??

Bob Newman

I had quintuple cardiac bypass surgery in the middle of
April and got very little sleep (2-3 hours at night - some
daily naps) for about 6 weeks after that as I was also
diagnosed with Sleep Apnea shortly there after. The last
week or so I have been getting about 6 hours sleep at night
but am still very tired during the day and sometimes napping
an hour or two (I NEVER napped during the day pre-surgery).
Is this normal 2 months + after the surgery? How long might
it continue?

Thanks in advance... Bob

I have no personal experience with bypass surgery but...

What meds are you taking? (After my blockage'n'stent I was
on two BP meds, plus Plavix and lovastatin. Upon removing
me from all the meds due to excellent lab results, my
cardiologist commented that I'd likely feel much better
and less tired without them - and, by jove, I believe he
was right.)

I think perhaps you are expecting too much to be feeling
more 'normal' after just a couple of months. Age will make
a difference too. I had valve surgery and another procedure
and it seemed a very gradual process getting back to
feeling stronger. It is now 20 months later and I if I
don't have a nap in the afternoon I just fall asleep at
8pm. A man at the club I go to had his second lot of bypass
surgery two years ago and it took a while for him to get
strong but he now bowls regularly. Give yourself time Bob.
Sleep is a great healer.

Good luck Diana

No, but it might be expected for someone whose sleep apnea
has worsened and is not receiving treatment for it.

Depends on the underlying cause which your doctor will best
be able to determine.

Thanks for the advice. Actually I think I'm doing quite well
as far as getting my strength back. My chest still hurts
quite a bit but I understand that is normal. I'm sure my
sleep problems are complicated by my sleep apnea also.
