Well...I would like to give my 'Yankee' friends and the
'Northerners"...(Is that right ?..)...a very happy
Independance Day......Enjoy the day...You won't get a
holiday this time...will you ? being on the
weekend...!...Now I still 'expect' to have my USA friends
still post on rec.food.cooking....

I can only 'blame' King George 3rd...for letting you all get
away from us....He definately should have not charged the
tax on the shipment of 'Tea' to you're Boston Folks to have
their 'Boston Tea Party'....You would all have a Queen
instead of a President !! And you all would have been 'much
more conservative'......and would ..most probably ..not of
had such a 'Queer Accent'....<g>.....

If things keep degrading, someday we will have a "Queen" for
our President and he will have a "Queer" accent.

Hey, this is America! It is our core belief that every
holiday except thanksgiving, xmas, new years are preordained
to be 3 day holidays, even if the original date doesn't fall
within the 3 day weekend.

Aye, that it is! The banks and all federal buildings are
closed as are most state and many private firms. We USians
manage to make a holiday out of just anything, regardless
of what day it falls on! And if this had fallen on a
Tuesday, you can be sure they'd have been closed Monday AND
Tuesday :)

Yeah, but in corporate America, my experience is they will
close on the Monday. Just like they are closed the Friday
after Thanksgiving. Now, if the 4th falls on a Wednesday ...
or Christmas for that matter, it's anyone's guess.

Usually they have a certain number of holidays and apportion
them as appropriately as they can.

One year, NYS decided to put the holidays on the actual day.
Screwed everything up royally. Memorial Day was on a
Tuesday, so I had to be at work on the Monday. No one was
allowed to take Monday off at the bank where I worked. So
there I was, learning the hard way up the parkway from the
jersey shore how to drive a stick, stuck in traffic with all
the other pissed off New Yorkers. Needless to say that law
went away quietly and quickly.

I think they close early on that Monday if it falls on a
Tuesday. So technically they aren't "closed" :)

Have you heard that the movie The Madness of King George was
screened as George III but the screening public said "we
didn't see George or George II, why would we go to George
III?" blacksalt who spent a wonderful year in Oz the year
the PM was eaten by a shark and a rumour went round he'd run
off to China, upon which his son said "that's absurd, he
doesn't even like Chinese food" and I got such a case of the
giggled over this I choked on my baked chicken. I was 9 at
the time, and just learning how stupid adults could be.

did anybody see the movie on CBS last night about the
revolutionary war? The King of England sent Lord Cornwalis
over here to the "Colonies" to do away with the "terrorists"
who were hiding in the bushes along side the kings highways
to ambush the royal soldiers as they rode by...sounds
strangely familiar doesn't it...except the kings soldiers
rode horses and not hummers...

Although it has become known as the primary reason, taxation
was one of the causes but not the sole cause of the
Revolution. Reports at the time were much more focussed on
the "intolerable" Quebec Act (1774) which gave the Ohio
region to Quebec and also made obvious the fact that King
George tolerated the practice of "popery". He was even
accused by the revolting of having gone soft on Rome, as
though that were a bad thing.

eration/qa_ 1774.html

http://college.hmco.com/history/readerscomp/rcah/html/ah_07-
3000 _quebecact.htm

A resolution was passed by the Continental Congress (October
1774) criticizing several Acts by Geo. Rex (actually
Parliament) among which the act "establishing the Roman
Catholic Religion in the province of Quebec" and other
measures aimed at the French-speaking subjects of the King.

http://www.historycarper.com/resources/docs/darotfcc.htm

A few days later (26 October 1774) the Continental Congress
wrote a letter to the inhabitants of Quebec calling upon
them to join, in a spirit of brotherhood, the upcoming
revolt against London. They wrote another in May 1775,
presumably during or after the Second Continental Congress
in Philadelphia.

http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Timeline%20of%20Q-
uebec% 20history%20(1774%20to%201790)

The duplicity of this approach was not lost on us and the
suggestion was properly rejected. The result was that the
French fought on the side of the crown of England in 1775
and later in 1812, thus preventing the US from gaining a
firm foothold in the Saint-Laurent basin.

"Someday" may have been 150 years ago. There were rumors
about James Buchanan...

Sorry about 3 posts... it's my newsreader acting up (I
actually found some duplicates of other posts waiting in
the cue and deleted them... some get past. I think this
happens when comcast doesn't let me post right away. That
sort of thing never happened when I posted via Earthlink's
news servers.

I love cooking (or nearer to the truth..Love eating
)......My Late wife used to be a 'Goumet' cook....So ..as I
love my food..the only way was to cook it myself..The two
youngest have been brought up as well as my oldest
Daughter...They were only 4 & 6 when she died...I have
always been home to rear them as a full time parent.... I
have noticed you in some this (and other) cooking
Newsgroups....

I heard it, as a chuckle about a true event, on NPR...I
think it was one of the options on Wait Wait Don't Tell Me
("the NPR news quiz"), and it was the true one.

And no, I've never been back to Australia. Too broke for
most of my adult life, and now too busy to take the time.
Plus, I hate long flights. I went down there and back on the
P&O Orient...boy was that civilized travel. blacksalt
