View Full Version : definitions of Transposon versus Viroid versus Virus

--- I am using Websters 4th edition College Dictionary and quoting
thereof :

Transposon: a segment of DNA that moves to a new location in
a chromosome, or to another chromosome or cell, and alters
the existing genetic instructions, sometimes producing
significant changes

Viroid: a viruslike plant pathogen consisting of a short
strand of genetic material (RNA) without a protein coating

Virus: any of a kingdom (Virus) of prokaryotes, usually
ultramicroscopic, that consist of nucleic acid, either DNA
or RNA, within a case of protein; they infect animals,
plants, and bacteria, and reproduce only within living cells

--- end quoting Websters

Transposons have Ty elements in yeast, a fungus.

There is a gap in the above 3 definitions, an obvious gap of
missing Viroids.

There should be a concept of Viroid for animals and not
just plants.

And it is difficult to tell apart Transposon with Viroid.
Both are missing a protein coating.

And another gap is that a Transposon should be either RNA or
DNA and a Viroid should be either DNA or RNA.

So there are many gaps in terminology concepts when it comes
to viruslike particles.

I am going to suggest that the term Viruslike should be the
umbrella for all of these concepts even though some would
consider Transposons as not a virus.

What does all of this have to do with Alzheimers, Parkinsons
and Prion diseases? Simple. Those 3 diseases are roughly 75%
induced by hereditary genetics. They are mostly hereditary
diseases with a few cases of spontaneous origins. I contend
that these few cases of Alzheimers or Parkinsons or Prion
that are not in body genetics produced are caused by some
Transposon or Viruslike particle from the environment that
is eaten or even breathed in and eventually makes its way
into the brain where it alters the genetics to form the
disease of Alzheimers, Parkinsons or Prion.

The main reason no viruslike particle was found in Kuru or
CJD victims who had not inherited the disease is because the
Transposon had already been melded into the chromosomal
rearrangement.

When a person eats infected Prion disease meat, it is not
the PrP proteins that are a danger but some Transposon or
Viruslike Particle that is the infectious agent. And it
travels into the brain of the victim and becomes
incorporated into the chromosomes where it starts the CJD or
sheep scrapie or Mad Cow Disease.

These viruslike particles also cause Parkinsons and
Alzheimers which are not hereditarily induced. So that the
victim comes into contact in the environment of some
Viruslike particle which maybe a Transposon and eats or
drinks or breathes the particle and years later comes down
with the disease.

I may as well list definitions according to the book
"Genetic Analysis" Griffiths et al 1996.

--- quoting Genetic Analysis:

Transposon: a mobile piece of DNA that is flanked by
terminal repeat sequences and typically bears genes coding
for transpositon functions.

Viral Transforming Gene: a gene within a viral genome that
can induce abnormal proliferation of cells in culture, and
similarly, can induce tumors in infected whole animals.

--- end quoting Genetic Analysis

Now I wonder if the term "repeat sequences" in Transposon
definition has anything to do with why proteins that are
unwanted proliferate in Prion and Alzheimers and Parkinsons.
That when a transposon makes its home in a animal body that
it hikes up the production of alphasynuclein or PrP etc etc.

I looked for definitions of viroid and virus in Genetic
Analysis but none readily-available, instead a definition of
Viral Transforming Gene. I make the case that instead of
just proliferation of cells or tumors, that these viruslike
particles proliferate proteins. Why stop at cell and tumor
proliferation? If it can proliferate cells and tumors, it
surely can proliferate proteins such as PrP or APP or
alphasynuclein.
